Library Cards

Faculty and Registered Students: Your Chicago Card is your library card. New faculty are automatically given borrowing privileges the business day after the issuance of their Chicago Card. All students registered for the current quarter are automatically given borrowing privileges. Students who are registered in the Spring and will be registered in the Fall are also automatically given privileges during the Summer.

Unregistered Students: You may obtain a library card from the Privileges Office upon receipt of a letter from your Dean of Students, who must certify that you are still pursuing a degree at the University. There is no fee for reference privileges. The fee for borrowing privileges is $60/quarter. You must establish library privileges for each quarter you are not registered.

Staff on Paid Benefits: New staff are automatically given borrowing privileges the business day after the issuance of their Chicago card.

Spouses and Domestic Partners: Spouses or domestic partners of currently registered students or staff on paid benefits may receive reference privileges. Spouses or domestic partners of faculty may receive borrowing privileges. Both parties must make initial application together at the Library Privileges Office, with photo identification. Domestic partners must be registered with the University's Benefits Counseling Office (Bookstore, 3rd floor) and present their statement of domestic partnership at the Library Privileges Office.

Alumni: Graduates of the University may obtain reference privileges from the Privileges Office at no cost. Borrowing privileges may be purchased. Click here for more information about alumni privileges.

Northwestern University Students, Faculty and Staff: Northwestern faculty, staff and currently registered students have reference privileges at all University of Chicago libraries. You will need to present your valid Wildcard for admission to Regenstein and/or Crerar. Northwestern faculty, staff, and students can also apply for borrowing privileges by visiting the Library Privileges Office in Regenstein Library. For more information, click here.

Visiting Readers: Other readers not affiliated with the University of Chicago may be eligible to use the Library. For more information click here.

Change of Address: Please report any address change promptly to a circulation attendant in any library or fill out the online change of address form. You may view your address information in the feature "My Account" of the Online Catalog. As we rely on you for your correct address, we will hold you responsible for recalls or notices sent to the address we have for you.

You may not, under any circumstances, check out material on someone else's library card or give someone else your card to use. This Library policy is designed to protect you from having your card used without your permission. This includes spouses and research assistants. Faculty may apply for Proxy Borrower Cards to enable research assistants to check out books on their faculty's account.

Lost Library Cards: Report lost cards immediately to the Privileges Office in Regensein so that your library bar code may be invalidated. When this office is closed, contact a circulation supervisor in Regenstein. To replace your Chicago Card, please visit the Chicago Card Office in the Administration Building (702-3344).
