Creating Bibliographies Using EndNote

Selecting an Output Style

Output Styles allow EndNote to translate information from your library into a particular citation styles. EndNote comes installed with output styles for most of the major citation manuals, including MLA, APA, Turabian, and Chicago, as well as style requirements for specific academic journals.

Before you begin to create bibliographies, you can preview how your references will look in your the style of your choice by using the "Hide/Show Preview" feature in EndNote. Open your EndNote Library and go to Edit/Output Style. Select the style you are interested in previewing and at the bottom right-hand side of the screen, you will see an option to "Show Preview". When you select this option, a window will appear at the bottom of the screen displaying how the highlighted reference would appear formatted in the style you have selected.

Creating Stand-Alone Bibliographies

There are several ways to create a formatted bibliography using EndNote. If you do not need to use in-text citations or footnotes, it is often easiest to create a stand-alone bibliography. EndNote provides two ways to do this:

Subject Bibliography Method
Use this method to select references from your EndNote library based on one or more fields in your references. This method allows you to list references multiple times by keyword, author or any other field that you choose.

  1. Select the Output Style you wish to use for your bibliography (APA, Chicago, etc.)
  2. Go to Tools/Subject Bibliography
  3. Select the field(s) which you would like to use as criteria for your bibliography (such as author or journal).
  4. Select the record(s) you would like to have in your bibliography.
  5. Click "OK" to create your bibliography.
  6. Select Layout to modify how your bibliography will display
  7. Choose Save to save as a text file, RTF file (Word compatible) or HTML (web page). You can also print without saving the file.

Export Method

  1. Select the Output Style you wish to use for your bibliography (APA, Chicago, etc.)
  2. Select the references you want to include in your bibliography.
  3. Select References/Show Selected References.
  4. Sort your references so they appear in your desired order.
  5. Select File/Export and select a file type - text, RTF (Word compatible) or HTML (web page) Click okay and your bibliography is created as a new file. We don't recommend XML format unless you're exchanging data with another EndNote user.

These methods provide a quick and easy way to create a bibliography or works cited list. However, if you want to create in-text citations or footnotes as well as your bibliography, you will need to use EndNote's Cite While You Write feature.
