Exporting Citations From Library Databases

You can import citations/references from the majority of the Library's databases into your RefWorks account for use in your footnotes or bibliographies. When importing references, please note the following:

If you are having difficulty importing references from any of these databases, or you do not see a specific database included in the list, please feel free to Ask a Librarian.

ABC-CLIO
(Historical Abstracts and America History and Life)

  1. Search and mark the records you would like to import.
  2. Click on "View Tagged Only".
  3. Click on "Export Options".
  4. Select "Full Entry", "Tagged Entries" and "RefWorks t". Click "Export Records".
  5. If RefWorks does not automatically open, select "Click here to access your RefWorks account."
  6. Log into RefWorks. Your references should automatically import.

APA PsycNet
(PsycInfo, PsycBooks, PsycCritiques)

  1. Search and mark the records you would like to import.
  2. Click on "Export"
  3. The file will be saved to your desktop.
  4. Open RefWorks
  5. Go to "References" and then "Import"
  6. For "Import Filter/Data Source" select "RIS Format "
  7. For "Database" select "RIS Format".
  8. Under "Import Data from the following Text File", click on "Browse" to find your file.
  9. Click "Import"

ARTstor

  1. Search and select the images you would like to import.
  2. On the menu at the top of the screen, select "Image Groups" and then "Save selected images as citations". ARTstor should provide a confirmation that the images were saved successfully.
  3. Go to "Image Groups" again, this time selecting "View saved citations".
  4. Under "Export Options", select "Directly export citations into RefWorks.
  5. Log into RefWorks. Your references should automatically import.

We regret that RefWorks import is not available at this time.

(Index Islamicus, Sociological Abstracts, WorldWide Political Science Abstracts, etc.)

  1. Search and mark the records you would like to import.
  2. Click on the "Export to RefWorks" button.
  3. Log into RefWorks. If RefWorks does not open automatically in another window, you may need to click on an additional link.
  4. Your references should automatically import.

EBSCO
(Academic Search Premier, Business Source Complete, EconLit, etc.)

  1. Search and select the records you would like to import by clicking on the "Add" icon on the right side of the screen.
  2. Select "View folder" or "Folder Has Items"
  3. Select "Export", then "Direct Export to RefWorks" and click "Save".
  4. RefWorks should automatically open. Log into RefWorks.
  5. Your references should import automatically.

GOOGLE SCHOLAR

A. Set your preferences in Google Scholar:

  1. From the Google Scholar search page, click on the Scholars Preferences link..
  2. Scroll down to the Bibliography Manager section.
  3. Select Show Links to Import into and select RefWorks from the drop-down.
  4. Click Save Preferences.

B. Export records into RefWorks:

  1. Conduct your search in Google Scholar
  2. Each record displayed will have an Import into RefWorks link. Clicking on the link will launch the RefWorks login page.
  3. Log into RefWorks.
  4. Once you log in, you are brought automatically to the Edit view of the reference. If you do not wish to edit the record, you can navigate to any other area of RefWorks.
  5. Your record is stored in your Last Imported Folder.

ISI
(Web of Science--Humanities, Social Science, and Science Citation Indexes)

  1. Search and mark the records you would like to import
  2. Click on "Submit Marks" (on right hand side of your screen)
  3. View your "Marked List" (on top of your screen)
  4. Under "Step 2: Select an option" keep "Field Tagged" in both drop down menus.
  5. Select "Save to File" NOT "Export to Reference Software"
  6. "Save" the file. Make sure your file has the .txt ending
  7. Open RefWorks
  8. Go to "References" and then "Import"
  9. For "Import Filter/Data Source" select "ISI (Institute for Scientific Information)"
  10. For "Database" select the appropriate database.
  11. You want to "Import Data from the following Text File."
  12. Click on "Browse" to find your .txt. file.
  13. Click "Import"

JSTOR

To export records from JSTOR, you will need to create a personal JSTOR account. To create an account, click on the "Login" link at very top right of your screen.

  1. Search and mark the records you would like to export
  2. Select "Save Citations" (you will need a JSTOR account, please see above).
  3. Select "# Saved Citations" at the top-right side of the screen.
  4. Mark the records you would like export again and click "Export Article Citations"
  5. Select "RefWorks"
  6. RefWorks should automatically open. Log into RefWorks.
  7. Your references should import automatically.

Please be aware that when you save citations for export, they will remain listed in your account. If you do not wish to keep them, you will need to delete them.

L'Annee Philologique

  1. Search and mark the records you want to import.
  2. Select "Export". Keep settings as is and click "Export" again.
  3. A pop-up window with the records will appear.
  4. Right click on the file and select "Save Page As.."
  5. Save file.
  6. Log into RefWorks.
  7. Select "Reference" and "Import"
  8. For the option "Import/Data Source" select "L'Annee Philologique"
  9. In the box "Import Data from the following Text File", browse and select the file you saved.
  10. Select "Import" Your citations should import automatically.

LexisNexis
(LexisNexis Academic, Congressional, State Capital, Statistical)

  1. Search and mark the records you would like to export.
  2. Click on Book Icon at the top left-hand side of the screen.
  3. Confirm that the Document Range indicates "Tagged Documents"
  4. Click "Export".
  5. A RefWorks window should appear on your screen. Log into RefWorks.
  6. Your citations should import automatically.

OCLC FirstSearch
(WorldCat, MLA, GEOBASE, Alternative Press Index, WilsonSelect, etc.)

  1. Search and mark the records you would like to import.
  2. Select the "Marked Records" option at the top of your screen.
  3. Select the "Export" icon in the grey toolbar.
  4. Select "RefWorks" under "Export To".
  5. Select "Export".
  6. RefWorks should appear on your screen. Log into RefWorks.
    Please Note: If you cannot open RefWorks, you may need to disable pop-ups.
  7. Your citations should import automatically.

OVID
(MEDLINE, GeoRef, Social Work Abstracts, etc.)

  1. Search and mark the records you would like to import.
  2. Go to "Results Manager"
  3. Under "Result Format" select "Direct Export"
  4. Under "Actions" select "Save"
  5. Select "Export results to RefWorks"
  6. A RefWorks window should appear on your screen. Log into RefWorks.
  7. Your citations should import automatically.

ProQuest
(ABI/INFORM, ProQuest Dissertations and Theses, ProQuest Newspapers and Historical Newspapers)

The Direct Export option in ProQuest databases is not working. You can export records using an import filter. Instructions are shown below:

  1. Search and mark the records you want to import.
  2. Select "Marked List".
  3. Select "Download in a format comparable with ProCite, EndNote, Reference Manager, and RefWorks".
  4. Save as a text (.txt) file.
  5. Log into RefWorks.
  6. Select "Reference" and "Import"
  7. For the option "Import/Data Source" select "ProQuest"
  8. In the box "Import Data from the following Text File", browse and select the .txt file you saved.
  9. Select "Import" Your citations should import automatically.

PubMed

  1. Search and mark the records you want to import.
  2. From the "Display" drop down menu select "Medline"
  3. From the "Send To" drop-down menu select "Text"
  4. Use the browser’s "Edit" function and "Select All" (or CTRL A for a shortcut)
  5. Copy the records using "Edit" and "Copy" (or ctrl C for a shortcut)
  6. Log into RefWorks
  7. Go to "References" and then "Import"
  8. For "Import Filter/Data Source" select "NLM PubMed"
  9. For "Database" select "PubMed"
  10. You want to "Import Data from the following Text" (the second radio button)
  11. Click in the text box, and "Edit" and "Paste" (or ctrl v for a shortcut)
  12. Click on Import

SciFinder Scholar

  1. Select references in SciFinder Scholar results list by checking boxes to the left of the citation
  2. Select File/Save As… from top menu bar in SciFinder Scholar
  3. From Save as Type drop down menu, select Tagged Format and type in desired filename; note the folder location where the file is saved or change to another folder
  4. Login to RefWorks
  5. Choose References/Import from RefWorks menu
  6. Select CAS SciFinder from Import Filter/Data Source dropdown menu
  7. Select CAPlus from Database dropdown menu
  8. Use Browse to locate the save tagged format text file
  9. Click the "Import" button.

WebSPIRS
(International Index to Film Periodicals, Index to Foreign Legal Periodicals, etc.)

  1. Search and mark the records you would like to import.
  2. Click on Save Icon
  3. Select "Export to RefWorks".
  4. Click "OK"
  5. A RefWorks Window should appear. Log into RefWorks.
  6. Your citations should import automatically.

Wilson
(Art Retrospective, Readers' Guide Retrospective, Humanities & Social Sciences Retrospective, etc.)

  1. Search and mark the records you want to import.
  2. Click on the "Print Email Save" button on the left side of the screen.
  3. Select the + sign next to "Export to Refworks, EndNote Software".
  4. Confirm selection under "Download Record(s) into RefWorks' Direct Export Tool."
  5. Click "Export"
  6. A RefWorks window should appear. Log into RefWorks.
  7. Your citations should import automatically.
