Entering RefWorks References in Documents Manually

Write-N-Cite, unfortunately, does not work with OpenOffice and other word processing programs (such as WordPerfect).

However, you can manually add references and format bibliographies with any word processor that can save documents in Rich Text Format (RTF). Here's how it's done:

  1. Login to your RefWorks account. Find the references that you want to cite. We recommend that you put these in a specific folder for easier reference.
  2. Edit your document. When you are ready to enter a citation, find the reference in your RefWorks database and note the Ref ID

  3. Go to your document and enter the Ref ID inside double curly braces {{ }}. You can enter multiple Ref IDs by separating them with semi-colons.

  4. Save your document as RTF.
  5. Go to your RefWorks account and choose Bibliography. Select the output style you want to use and choose Format Paper and Bibliography.

  6. Click Create Bibliography
  7. RefWorks will process your document and output a final version with your references and bibliography properly formatted:
