RefWorks | Importing a RefWorks Account From Another University

If you have a RefWorks account from another institution (or a personal subscription), and would like to move these references into a University of Chicago RefWorks account, please follow the instructions below:

  1. If you have not already done so, you will need to set up a University of Chicago RefWorks account. Log onto RefWorks at the University of Chicago and select "Create an Account." If you are using using a computer off-campus you will need to have the University of Chicago's Group Code.
  2. Once you have your University of Chicago RefWorks account, you will need to log into your account at the previous institution. You will need to use that institution's group code since you are off-campus.
  3. From either the Tools or References headings, select "Backup/Restore" from the drop-down menu.
  4. Select "Backup" and mark "Include References", then select the "Perform Backup" button.
  5. At the prompt, save the file to your desktop for use later.
  6. Log out of your old account and log into your new University of Chicago account.
  7. Return to the Backup/Restore page and select the "Restore" option.
  8. Browse to the appropriate back up file saved on your desktop (the file extension will be *.rwb).
  9. Mark both "Include References" and "Include Output Styles."
  10. Select the "Perform Restore" button and wait for the process to complete.

You should now have a University of Chicago account with all of your records in place. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Library.
