Logging Into RefWorks From Off-Campus

If you use RefWorks from off-campus, you will be prompted for your CNET ID. This will allow you to connect to the program via the campus proxy server.

If you are a hospital employee who does not have a CNET ID, you can connect to RefWorks by visiting www.refworks.com and selecting "Login". You will need to enter the University of Chicago's RefWorks Group Code to access your RefWorks account.

Direct Export and the Proxy Server

Some of the Library's databases, including those that use the FirstSearch (such as WorldCat) or ProQuest (such as ABI Inform or ProQuest Newsstand) interfaces, do not recognize the proxy server when you are exporting records into RefWorks. As a result, you may be prompted to enter the University's RefWorks Group Code.

The Library is investigating whether we can resolve this issue. Should you have any problems with direct export off-campus, please contact the Library.

Using Write-N-Cite Off-Campus

Windows

To use Write-N-Cite off-campus, we recommend that you configure the plugin to connect to the University of Chicago's proxy server. Here's how:

• Install Write-N-Cite onto your computer.
  Log into RefWorks. Go to Tools --> Write-N-Cite. More Instructions.
• Open the WNC Proxy Configuration Utility:
  Start --> Programs --> RefWorks --> WNC Proxy Configuration Utility
• Enter this URL:
  http://proxy.uchicago.edu/login?url=https://www.refworks.com/Refworks/?WNC=true
  Click OK
• Start Write-N-Cite.
  Click on the Write-N-Cite Icon on your desktop or in MS Word. You will be taken to a page to login to the University of Chicago proxy server. This page uses your CNetID and password. You then login to your RefWorks account using your RefWorks user name and password. You can now insert references into your Word document.

MacOS

• Install Write-N-Cite onto your computer.
  Log into RefWorks. Go to Tools --> Write-N-Cite. More Instructions.
• Start Write-N-Cite.
  Choose Write-N-Cite --> Preferences. Choose Proxy and enter this URL:
  http://proxy.uchicago.edu/login?url=https://www.refworks.com/Refworks/?WNC=true
• Restart Write-N-Cite. You will be taken to a page to login to the University of Chicago proxy server. This page uses your CNetID and password. You then login to your RefWorks account using your RefWorks user name and password. You can now insert references into your Word document.
