If, at the Location shown in the Catalog, you cannot find an item with a Status of "Not checked out", here are some suggestions to help you locate it. If you are still unsuccessful, you may submit an online search request by returning to the Catalog record and clicking the "Not on shelf?" link for the item at that Location. Library staff will then search for it and let you know whether it was found or not. |
|
Confirm the Status |
If this is a multipart title, click on the "Show
circulation status" link to determine the Status of the volume
or part that you need. If the item's Status is "Recently returned," check the reshelving carts in the area. Items on these carts are arranged in call number order. |
| Confirm the Location |
Each library has distinct shelving areas which are identified under
Location, e.g., "Regenstein, Bookstacks", "Crerar, Biomedical
Journals, Floor 1", etc. |
| Confirm that you are looking on the right shelf |
All shelves are marked with labels showing the call number range. Most
call numbers sort alphabetically, then numerically, e.g.: |
| Look in the general area where the item should be shelved | Sometimes items are mis-shelved. Check to the left and right of where you think the item should be. If an item should be near either end of a shelf, look on the shelf above or below as well. |
| Check the reshelving carts/shelves in the area | Do this especially if the Catalog shows the Status as "Recently returned." Items on reshelving carts are arranged in call number order. |
| I've done all of the above and I need it right away | Go to the nearest reference or circulation desk to seek advice--these desks are typically near the main entrance. Library staff are happy to assist you in locating material. |
| If you still can't find it, fill out a search request form--click the "Not on shelf?" link in the Catalog record | You should receive a response within 1-5 business
days (Monday-Friday). If Library staff find the item, the notice will
tell you where you can pick it up and how long it will be held for you.
If the item is not found, the notice will suggest you acquire it through
interlibrary loan. If you do not receive a response within 5 business days, inquire at the circulation desk of the library where the item should be or email Search Services. |
