Computing Services | Network Access from Regenstein Faculty Studies

I. GETTING STARTED

A. CONNECTIONS AVAILABLE IN YOUR STUDY
An Ethernet connection is provided in each faculty study. These are gray jacks that look like phone jacks, but they are for network connections only and cannot be used with a telephone. These jacks will connect your computer directly to the campus network. You do not need (and in fact, cannot use) a modem to connect to the network with these jacks.

B. NETWORK HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE
To connect to the network, you must have network hardware and software installed on your computer. These tools are built into some personal computers but must be purchased separately for others. Consult the Campus Computer Stores for detailed information on the requirements for your particular computer. We recommend that you obtain a Connectivity Package prepared by Networking Services and Information Technologies (NSIT). While other products may be used, NSIT fully supports only the products included and recommended in the package.

C. ETHERNET Ethernet is available for both Macintosh and Intel-based (e.g. IBM and compatible) computers. Ethernet jacks are only activated upon request. Call 773 702-8740 or email studies@lib.uchicago.edu to activate the jack in your study and obtain its IP address. You will then need to configure your network software with the assigned network IP address.
