How do I recall an item currently checked out by another user?

If the title you need is checked out to another user, you can request that the item be recalled for your use. To recall an item, go to the Circulation Status of the Library Catalog record and click on the "recall item" link next to the due date.

Recalling a Book

Once you have selected "Recall Item" you will be taken to a form where you must enter your barcode and PIN.

Barcode: The small number under the barcode on your Chicago Card.

PIN: If you are a student, this is your student number. If you are a faculty member, staff member or other borrower, you will need to contact the Library to be assigned a PIN.

When you recall an item, the Library will contact the borrower to request that the item be returned before the regular due date. Recalls usually take from 7 to 10 days, depending on how quickly the current borrower returns the item. Library staff will place the item on hold for you and notify you that it is available for check-out. You can check on the status of your recalled item by logging onto your Library Account.

Please note that there are some instances where items cannot be recalled (if the item is on reserve, is in the Special Collections or Reading Rooms, etc). The recall feature cannot be used to place books on hold.
