Using Chalk to Submit Course Reserves

Instructors can now request reserve materials by using a new Course Reserves Management system on Chalk.

Why should I use Chalk for Submitting Course Reserves?

There are several advantages to submitting course materials using the Library Course Reserves Management system:

Getting Started

  1. To begin, you must have a Chalk site for your course. To request a site, go to http://chalk.uchicago.edu. Under "Site Requests" on the left side of the screen, select "Course Request" and complete the brief form.
    If you need further assistance, please visit the Chalk information page or contact Chalk support staff at chalk@uchicago.edu.
  2. Once your course site is established, log into Chalk using your CNetID.
  3. Under "My Courses", select the course you would like to add reserve readings for. If you do not see your course listed, contact Chalk support staff at chalk@uchicago.edu.

  4. Once in your online course, select the "Library Course Reserves" in the left menu bar.

    This opens the Library reserves module for this course in Chalk.

Submitting Reserve Items Online

Once you are in the University of Chicago Library Course Reserves module in Chalk, you can begin to submit and manage your course reserve items.

To begin, go to the Instructor Class Tools option in the menu on the left side of the screen and select "Add Reserve Items".

You add new reserve readings, such as an article, chapter, CD, DVD, or book. Or, you can import items from previous course reserve lists.

To add a new item to reserves, select the icon representing the type of material you would like to include in your reserve list (article, chapter, book, CD or DVD). If you do not see the type of reserve item that you need for your course, please contact the Library.

You will be presented with a brief form asking for bibliographic information about the item. Enter as much information as you can, following the instructions (required information is noted by * in the record). Below are some examples of the course reserve submission form.

Items uploaded or linked are immediately available for your students. Items provided by the Library will take longer as they require processing by staff.

Importing Items Previously on Reserve

If you have taught a course before, you can upload items from previous reserve lists. Once again, using this option will facilitate processing.

Select the course which holds the items you would like to place on reserve.

Indicate each item that you would like to import with a check mark. You can also change the availability dates to limit the time the item can be accessed during the quarter. Click "Import" to add them to your current course's reserve list.

Reviewing Your Reserve Selections

Once you have submitted your reserve items, they will display in a list within your account. You can check the processing status of items in your list, making any changes as needed.

You can also register for e-mail notices through the Library Course Reserves Management system. An e-mail will be sent to you whenever your course reserves are updated by you, your TAs, or Library reserves staff. Your students can also sign up for this feature so they can learn when reserve items are available.

If you would like to review how students will see your course reserves list, select "Switch to Student Mode" in the Library Course Reserves menu. Please note that students will only see course reserve items that are fully processed.

Reserve Item Usage

The "Reserve Item Usage" option allows you to view the number of times each of your reserve items are accessed. By selecting "Show Detailed Usage", you can see what day each item was accessed.

My EMails

"My EMails" allows you to review all of the e-mails sent to you about your course reserves processing.
