To access the course reserve materials, you must log into Chalk, the University's course management system. You can access Chalk from a link on the Library's web site under "Course Materials".
Log on to Chalk with your CNET ID. Under "My Courses", select the course which has materials on reserve.
The course site should open in your browser. Select the link for "Library Course Reserves" on the menu on the left side of your screen. The link usually appears at the bottom of the list.
After selecting "Library Course Reserves", the University of Chicago Library Course Reserves system will open up within your course site.
Reserve items are listed alphabetically by title. If you see a long list, you can use the "Find" feature in your browser to locate a specific item. Some instructors will also use tags to organize their readings.
Most articles and book chapters are available online via the course seserves system. These are "E-Reserve" items. To open the document, just click on "View Item".
Books, CDs, and DVDs on reserve are held behind the circulation desk at the Library and are available on a short loan. To access these materials, click on "View Availability" to open the Lens record for the item.
Check the location, call number, and status in the record (scroll down to the bottom of the screen) to determine which Library the item is located in and view the loan period.
To obtain the item, just write down the call number and bring it to the staff at the Circulation Desk at the appropriate campus library. Staff will retrieve the book and you will be able to check it out. Check out times vary from 2 hour to 48 hours, depending on the item and the course.
Please Note: Books and other reserve items checked out from the Library must be returned promptly (due to their high demand), or you will face heavy fines ($1.00 per hour or part of hour; $75 maximum per item).

Because reserve items are used by many people, it is especially important that items are returned on time. You will be charged $1.00 per hour (or part of hour) that a reserve item is overdue, up to $75.00. It is your responsibility to know the date and time your reserve items are due, and to return your reserve items to the correct library. Long overdue reserve material will be marked as lost, and you will be billed for replacement costs. You may also be billed if a reserve item is returned with missing material or is returned damaged. Reserve fees and fines may be paid at any circulation desk. If left unpaid, reserve fines will become delinquent and your borrowing privileges may be blocked. For more information, consult Due Dates, Fines, & Appeals.
If you have problems accessing reserve items, especially electronic reserves, please contact the Library.
