Library Information for Laboratory School StudentsFAQs About Borrowing, Renewing, or Returning Books |
Borrowing Books
Is there a limit to how many books can I borrow?
Up to 25 at a time.
Where do I check out books at the Library?
You can check out books at the Circulation Desk at the Library.
Can I check out any book I want from the Library?
You can check out any book which is located in the stacks and is not marked with "Building Use Only." Books in the Reading Rooms in Regenstein or in the reference collections at other libraries cannot be checked out. In addition, books in some of the other Library collections, such as the Special Collections Research Center or the Map Collection are for building use only.
How do I check out books?
Just bring your Library Card to the Circulation Desk with the items you would like to check out. A staff member will check them out to you.
How long can books be checked out?
One quarter at a time, but you can renew them up to 3 times. This means that once you check out a book, you can essentially have it out of the library for just about a year.
Renewing Books
How do I renew a book?
There are three ways you can renew your books.
1. Go to the online catalog and select "My Account". Enter in your barcode and PIN. Your barcode is the small number underneath the barcode on your ID. You can get a PIN at the Identification and Privileges Office when you set up your card, by visiting the Circulation Desk at Regenstein Library, or by contacting pin@lib.uchicago.edu. Click on "Items Out."
2. Bring your Library card to the circulation desk at any library and circulation staff will renew your books for you.
3. Email renewals@lib.uchicago.edu with your renewal request. You will need to include your name and your library barcode. You will receive an email reply confirming that your books were renewed.
Returning Books
Where do I return books?
At all of the campus libraries, there are drop boxes for returning books. Return items that have been recalled or reserve books in the separately marked drop boxes. Do not place fragile items (delicate books, CD-ROMs, videotapes, etc.) in the drop boxes, but return to the counter attendents.
What if I return my books late?
If you return books late, you will be notified of your fines. Detailed information regarding overdue notices and a list of Library fines can be found on our web site. Please be aware that if you do not return recalled or reserve books on time, you will be heavily fined! You can prevent high fines by frequently checking your account. Just click on "My Account" on the Library Catalog to view a list of when items are due and whether they can be renewed.
Do I have to return books to the Library where I checked them out from?
University of Chicago Library books cannot be returned to the Laboratory School Library.
However, you can return books to any University of Chicago Library on campus. If you chose to return books at another Library, remember that items will not be officially checked in until they arrive at the proper location. As a result, you should return the books to the correct Library if it is very close to the due date.
You should always return recalled or reserve books to the Library you checked them out from.
