FAQs About Library Access and Privileges

Laboratory School

I am a student at the Laboratory School. Can I use the University of Chicago Library for my research?

If you are a sophmore, junior or senior you may apply for privileges by filling out an application with a Lab School Librarian. Freshmen are eligible under special circumstances, if approved by a librarian (e.g. Model U. N.) Your name will then be placed on a list of approved students and sent to the ID & Privileges Office.

If you are a dependent of a University of Chicago faculty member, you may also be able to obtain privileges through your parent or guardian.

Once my name is on the list, what do I do?

If it is the first time getting a card, you'll need to visit the ID & Privileges Office at the Library. The Office is located next to the entry gate of the Joseph Regenstein Library. For the Office's current hours, click here.

When you visit the Office, you will need to bring a form of photo ID with you (either a driver's license, passport, or Lab School ID). The Library will then issue you a card to use the University of Chicago Library.

Once I have a card, how many books can I check out?

25 at a time

How long can books be checked out?

One quarter at a time, with renewals 3 times. This means that once you check out a book, you can essentially have it out of the library for up to a year.

How often does my Library card need to be renewed?

Every academic quarter for the University of Chicago. View the academic calendar to see when each quarter begins.

How do I renew my card?

Each quarter you need to make sure the Lab School Librarian has your name on the list, but then from there you just go to the online form and request a renewal. Or you can do it in person at the Library's ID & Privileges Office. If you request via the online form, we'll respond to you and let you know once your card has been renewed.

What if I lose my card?

You will need to come to the ID & Privileges Office with a form of identification. You will be charged a $10.00 fee for the replacement card.

What if I forget my card when I want to use the Library?

If you have a current account, the ID & Privileges Office will issue you a day pass. If you do not have a current library account and are not on the list, you need to visit the lab school librarian to request a one day authorization for a day pass.

Can I bring my friends or family with me into the Library?

Family members can receive a day pass from the ID & Privileges Office to use the Library while you are there. Your friends must be on the Lab School list and have a Library card to gain entry to the University of Chicago Library.

What if I am the son/daughter/dependent of a University of Chicago faculty member? Do I need to be on the list?

If you are a dependent of a University of Chicago faculty member, you are eligible for Library privileges for the entire year. However, to set up these privileges, you must come to the Identification and Privileges Office with your parent or guardian.
