The University of Chicago Library has other collections which are located within the campus libraries. Below you will find a description of some of these locations.
Reading Rooms
In the Regenstein Library, there are Reading Rooms on floors
1-5 and A-Level. The reading
rooms contain reference books and journals which cannot be checked out.
Stacks / Bookstacks
The area in the Library where the circulating books (or items you can check
out) are located. The term "stacks" is mainly used in the Regenstein
Library.
Reference Collections
An area in the Library where reference staff
can be found and which houses books like dictionaries, directories, encyclopedias,
and handbooks. These books cannot be taken out of the Library. At the Crerar
Library and Regenstein Library,
the general reference collections are found on the 1st floor.
Reserves
Some books may be listed in the Library Catalog as being "on
reserve". These books can be checked out for a limited amount of time (2
hours, 4 hours, or 24 hours). To obtain an item from the Reserve Collection,
just take the call number for the book to the Circulation Desk at the library
the item is located at. How do I find items
on reserve?
The Special Collections Research Center
Located on the 1st floor
of the Regenstein Library, the Special
Collections Research Center houses the Library's rare books, manuscript
materials, and the University Archives. Please note that Special
Collections Research Center has different hours
and policies than the rest of the Library.
Current Periodicals
The location where the recent issues of journals and magazines are found. In
Regenstein, the Current Periodicals Reading Room can be found in the Second
Floor Reading Room. In Crerar, the current periodicals can be found on the
First Floor. Older issues
of journals or magazines can be found in the stacks or reading rooms.
Microforms
Microfilm and microfiche materials can be found in the Third
Floor Reading Room of Regenstein Library and on the First
Floor of Crerar Library. The Law Library also has some materials on microfiche.
Dewey Collection
The John Crerar Library have some older books and journals which are shelved
by the Dewey Decimal System. They can be found on the Lower
Level.
Recordings Collection
CDs, cassettes, and records can be found in the Library's Recordings
Collection on the Third Floor
Reading Room of the Regenstein Library.
Map Collection
Maps, charts and other cartographic materials can be found in Regenstein's Map
Collection, which is located in the Third
Floor Reading Room. The Map Collection is only open in the afternoons on
Monday-Friday and items cannot be checked out.
