GENERAL
1. In four years I never understood what questions would be
pertinent to ask a reference librarian, and so considered help they
could provide among my means for obtaining the necessary resources.
Also, I never heard a word from a professor concerning the people
who actually work at the library and the relevance of the
information they (reference librarians or otherwise) could provide.
Partly for this reason, I never trusted a librarian to answer
questions about resources in my field.
2. I have not seen only once in my entire years in the college a
librarian helping anyone.I don't know what to ask them and what
they do to help me.
3. Two of the reference librarians are excellent, absolutely
amazingly helpful and patient and friendly. Others vary and some
are downright clueless about how to find things, what approaches to
suggest for research, really anything.
4. More readily accessible information about services, etc. would
be helpful. (i.e. I don't know if reference librarians could help
me distinguish reliable sources in my field of study, etc.).
5. I would also like to know whether or not our ask-a-librarian
service is a service that uses a consortia of libraries or whether
it is local U of C librarians, since that would affect how often I
might use it.
6. I come in the evening and there is never anyone at the main
info. table in the center.
7. i kept going to the reg and being told to go to crear, but when
i was there in the evenings, there didn't seem to be reference
personnel available;
8. The reference staff, formerly (~10 years ago) exceptionally
able, has a very strong (and very bad) tendency nowadays to want to
use only electronic resources. Internet is good, but sometimes,
especially in classics, print is still much better.
9. Most of my unsatisfied responses about employee willingness to
help and knowledge were tainted by my experiences with one
librarian. I had 2 bad experiences with the same person at the
reference desk (who was never able to help me). Other than that one
person, most people I have delt with have been very nice and have
gone out of their way to be helpful.
10. You need people who are better aware of the needs in my field
and more budget to purchase resources.
11. The librarians usually have a rough idea, but are not experts
on all field, thus, for example, cannot usually help me with very
precise questions on historical material.
12. Although the librarians themselves are friendly and helpful,
the training sessions I have attended with them have been
completely out of touch with student needs.
SPECIFIC SUBJECTS/LIBRARIES
13. Librarians at Crerar are much more friendly and helpful than
librarians at the Reg, as a general rule. I look forward to asking
librarians questions at Crerar, but dread doing so (and avoid doing
so) at the Reg.
14. Also, I'd like a little more explanation about the Ask a Law
Librarian events that are scheduled in the law school Briefs during
various lunch periods. I've never taken advantage of one of these,
but it's because I have no idea what they are for or why they are
happening.
15. I truly think that the personnel at the library needs to be
more caring for and interested in faculty research. I often feel
that the idea of the dignity of service is absent from some staff
members (too much aloofness among some). A new librarian for the
Humanites has just been hired and she should make her best effort
to open lines of communication with faculty members, especially
with those whose fields of study are underrepresented in the
collection. Perhaps a visit to the departments related to fields
under her purview may be helpful, so she can become acquianted with
the research we are doing at Chicago and with our needs.
16. It would be more helpful if the people at the circular desk
were more familiar with and could help me more with interlibrary
loans.
17. French has been without a true bibliographer for a year now.
Students have not been updated on the search or who has been hired
for the position. While the stand-in bibliographer is rather
helpful, we feel adrift.
18. You have excellent business reference librarians - they are
extremely knowledgeable and very helpful - a great resource.
Institutionally though there seems to be very limited coordination
with the business school.

20. Overall the books available from the Regenstein library are
excellent. However, the accessibility is not always good, and there
are times when the help desk is unoccupied.
21. How can you expect to provide services to patrons when there
are no reference librarians on floors other than one? I don't think
access services realizes the number of students not finding help
who simply give up when they can't find anyone. How about a help
phone or two in the stacks?

the monograph and seriels literature and for working towards
getting so many resources available on-line.
6. Any time I have told a librarian about something that I thought
didn't work efficiently, it has changed within 6 months. I think
that's pretty remarkable for something as complex and unwieldy as a
library operation.
7. Librarians are very pleasant and extremely helpful.
8. Reference librarians tend to be very helpful and nice, student
employees much less so.

21. I had 2 bad experiences with the same person at the reference
desk (who was never able to help me). Other than that one person,

SPECIFIC LIBRARIANS/ LIBRARIES
22. On the bright side, I find the library staff always courteous
and extremely knowledgeable -- I want to single out Paul Belloni,
who has helped me above and beyond the call of duty with problems
concerning OVID. However, whenever I have needed to speak with a
librarian, I have been thrilled with the level of knowledge,
attention and interest they have shown in my questions.
23. You have excellent business reference librarians - they are
extremely knowledgeable and very helpful - a great resource.
Institutionally though there seems to be very limited coordination
with the business school.
24. the excellent service I consistently receive from librarians at
the information desk on the 1st floor of the Regenstein (in person
or on the phone - I use both),
25. Beth Bidlack has done an excellent job of communicating with
the Div School, especially her willingness to offer orientation and
informational programs for individual classes or groups.
26. Beth Bidlack does an awesome job of informing the divinity
school of new resources, programs, and training sessions. Thanks
Beth!
27. Rebecca, my class librarian, sends several e-mails a year and
I've always thought of her as a resource I can use. Her level is
communication is sufficent and she doesn't go overboard trying to
help; she's perfect.
28. However, I think that the class librarians do a great
job.
29. They are very helpful. Especially the Second Year librarian.
Keep up the good work!
30. Frank Conoway is great.
31. All services, especially the Humanities Bibliographers, are
generally very good
32. The research librarian for Classics is very helpful and
friendly.
33. I gave the best ratings for staff and this is mainly because of
Sem Suter; he has proven extremely helpful countless times!
34. the staff dedicated to Slavic, East European, and Eurasian
resources (my main interests) are especially wonderful.
35. South Asian Librarian James Nye is incredibly helpful, and so
is his assistant Cassie Adcock. South Asia collection is
amazing.
36. I have always found William Alspaugh in the East Asian Library
and Lyonette Louis Jacques in the Law library to be very kind,
knowledgable and helpful.
37. I am truly indebted to Mr. Okuizumi and the staff responsible
for the Japanese language materials- I am always surprised by the
breadth and depth of the Japanese language print materials.
Numerous trips to Japan have been avoided by the availability or
reprint Japanese educational journals from late Meiji-Taisho-early
Showa eras.
38. the staff dedicated to Slavic, East European, and Eurasian
resources (my main interests) are especially wonderful.
39. The high professionalism of the entire staff under the superb
leadership of Judith Wright is not equalled at any other school
I've ever visited. They do more with fewer resources than any of
their peer institutions and remain the benchmark by which every
other law library can be judged.
40. I have been very happy with the DA research librarians'
expertise, willingness to help, and thoroughness in following up on
my questions.
41. The librarians at D'Angelo are great. They are always helpful
and very courteous.
42. Andrea Twiss-Brooks (sp?) provides excellent library resource
support for my work in the chemistry program. Her training sessions
for new chemistry search programs has been extremely helpful to
me.
43. Andrea Twiss Brooks does a great job helping the Chem
department find what they need.
44. Deb Werner has been very helpful in the Crerar Library.
45. Librarians at Crerar are much more friendly and helpful than
librarians at the Reg, as a general rule. I look forward to asking
librarians questions at Crerar, but dread doing so (and avoid doing
so) at the Reg.
46. Reference desk staff is always very helpful at Crerar
47. Also, once in Crerar, the electronic resources gateway wasn't
functioning (i.e., the website was down and I couldn't search
journal articles). A library employee (looked like a graduate
student, maybe), spent 10 minutes with me teaching me how to search
for those same journal articles using the web and then utilizing
the library's IP address to link into them via their respective
journal webpages. This was very helpful and it showed me another
way to access the same information, a way that is much easier when
I'm just searching through pubmed or a similar database. The time
that person spent with me was VERY appreciated and really
contributed to my positive opinion of the library system.
48. I find everyone I come across curtious and helpful. But I know
more about Mrs. Modschiedler at Crerar and the taff in DML lab. I
cannot praise them enough. They are extremely helpful and nice to
deal with.
49. Crerar librarians have been extremely helpful in teaching me
how to use citation programs and navigating medical literature,
often going well out of their way- what a wonderful
experience.
50. I am a support person for the residents and faculty in
anesthesia. Whenever I have had difficulty locating aterials, the
librarians--with one exception--have been extremely
supportive.
51. SSA's library is always in good order. The librarians are very
helpful; always available; and friendly.
52. Eckhart people are wonderful, as is the Music area.
