Ruth et Booz

This beautiful edition of the Book of Ruth executed in the Art Deco style is the result of a collaboration between the artist and printmaker François-Louis Schmied and the Orientalist Dr. J-C Mardrus. Completed in 1930, Ruth et Booz was one of eight books that the pair collaborated on. Their works reflect the contemporary fascination with the exoticism of the Middle East. Mardrus was the first to translate the Thousand and One Arabian Nights into French. Schmied illustrated an edition of the Arabian Nights as well as other translations from the Bible, including The Creation from Genesis. The book is lavishly illustrated with woodcuts by Schmied, which he has enhanced with gold leaf, one of his trademarks.
