Renewable Energy and Water Conservation Systems

What does renewable energy and water conservation have to do with designing a sustainable building?
The resources that go into the operation of a building are not often visible but the operations depend on these resources to function. Designing building operating systems with these principles in mind is important to the overall sustainability of a building.
