- 12/15/03: Read Chronicle of Higher Education online. Search full issues of The Chronicle since 1989, plus daily articles, jobs, career news and advice, summaries of magazine and journal articles, listings of scholarly books, grant and research competitions, and information on people, events, and deadlines in academe. The Facts & Figures section includes the Almanac of Higher Education and other major annual surveys, data by subject, and additional features.

- 12/5/03: The Fall issue of LIBrary Reports and Announcements, a newsletter written for the faculty and University community, is now available online. LIBRA is also published in print form. - 11/22/03: Oxford Scholarship Online currently has four subject modules--Philosophy, Religion, Economics and Finance, and Political Science--and offers over 700 complete and fully searchable books, with at least 200 titles to be added each year.
- 11/20/03: HeritageQuest Online currently contains over 25,000 family and local history books from ProQuest's Genealogy & Local History Collection as well as the U.S. Federal Census, 1790-1930. In addition to searching by name, the census records can be searched by place of birth, age, ethnicity, and other variables. Additional material will be added, including ProQuest Newspaper Obituaries, Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Application Files, and Freedman's Bank Records.

- 9/29/03: All Night Study Space is again available in the A-level Reading Room of Regenstein from 1 a.m. to 8 a.m. Monday through Friday this academic year.

- 11/4/03: Index to Legal Periodicals & Books is a bibliographic database that cites articles from legal periodicals and indexes law books. Periodical coverage includes law reviews, bar association journals, university publications, yearbooks, institutes, and government publications. Index to Legal Periodicals & Books covers all areas of jurisprudence, including recent court decisions, new legislation, and original scholarship.

- 10/28/03: Library Book Sale: The Library is holding its semiannual book sale of more than 5,000 duplicate and discarded volumes from Wednesday, November 5 through Saturday, November 8. Hours are 1:30 -- 3:30 p.m. Wednesday; 10 a.m. -- 3:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday; and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Prices on Wednesday are $15 for hardbacks and $5 for paperbacks. On Thursday, prices are $5 for hardbacks and $1 for paperbacks. On Friday, prices are $1 for hardbacks and $0.50 for paperbacks. On Saturday, all remaining books are free. The book sale room is located on the 1st floor of Regenstein in Room 120W.
- 10/17/03: The IMF's International Financial Statistics database is a standard source of international statistics on all aspects of international and domestic finance containing approximately 32,000 time series. It reports, for most countries of the world, current and historical data needed in the analysis of problems of international payments and of inflation and deflation, i.e., data on exchange rates, international liquidity, international banking, money and banking, interest rates, prices, production, international transactions, government accounts, and national accounts.
- 10/17/03: The ABA/BNA Lawyers' Manual on Professional Conduct provides news and guidance on various aspects of attorney conduct and legal ethics. The Manual is organized into four main sections: the Practice Guides, Ethics Rules, Current Reports, and Ethics Opinions.
- 10/16/03: The new "Science Writing Prize for College Students", which honors the memory of John Crerar, is officially launched. First prize is $1500; second prize is $500. The award acknowledges the ability of a College student to produce a paper on a scientific topic which is thorough in its arguments, but accessible to a broad readership. - 9/11/03: Photocopying Rates: Due to the marked decrease in photocopying volume over the last academic year, the price per copy on the public photocopiers throughout the library system is now $0.12 (with a card). The increase is required to provide these machines and to adequately service them. Other copy prices (e.g. for networked printing and for copying from microforms) remain the same. - 9/08/03: The Chemistry Library's books and journal collections are now housed in the John Crerar Library. The Chemistry Library in Jones is now closed as a library-maintained service point. For more information, please contact Andrea Twiss-Brooks or Crerar Reference.
- 9/08/03: The Chicago Card and Library & Network Privileges Office is now open on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m and 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. In addition, the Office is now open until 7 p.m. Monday through Thurbsday. On Fridays, the Office continues to remain open until 5 p.m.
- 8/11/03: The Chicago Card Office and the NSIT Account Administration public assistance functions have been combined with the Library Privileges Office. All three functions are now located on the first floor of Regenstein Library in Room 100F, in the space formerly occupied by the Privileges Office.
- 7/24/03: Criminal Justice Abstracts provides comprehensive coverage of the major journals in criminology and related disciplines, extensive coverage of books, and unparalleled access to reports from governmental and non-governmental agencies. For each document, an informative summary of the findings, methodology, and conclusions is provided. Topics include crime trends, prevention projects, corrections, juvenile delinquency, police, courts, offenders, victims, and sentencing.
- 7/21/03: The majority of the current periodicals (with the exception of the area studies collections in the 5th floor Reading Room) have been centralized into one collection in call number order on the east side of the 2nd floor Reading Room. The current newspapers (again with the exception of the area studies newspapers in the 5th floor Reading Room) will also be centralized in this area and shelved by title. The move of the newspapers will be completed by the end of July.
- 7/15/03: Safari Tech Books Online provides access to a variety of technical, computer software and programming books.
- 7/15/03: The Index Islamicus database indexes literature on Islam, the Middle East and the Muslim world.
- 7/15/03: North American Immigrant Letters, Diaries and Oral Histories (IMLD): IMLD includes 7 authors and approximately 10,000 pages of information and provides a unique and personal view of what it meant to immigrate to America and Canada between 1800 and 1950. Composed of contemporaneous letters and diaries, oral histories, interviews, and other personal narratives, the series provides a rich source for scholars in a wide range of disciplines. In selected cases, users will be able to hear the actual audio voices of the immigrants.
- 7/15/03: Black Thought and Culture (BLTC): BLTC contains 84 sources with 36 authors which includes the non-fiction published works of leading African Americans. Particular care has been taken to index this material so that it can be searched more thoroughly than ever before. The collection presents the materials from more than 100 individuals. Where possible the complete published non-fiction works are included, as well as interviews, journal articles, letters and other fugitive material.
- 7/10/03: Move of the current periodicals in Regenstein: Between July 10 and August 15, the majority of the current periodicals in Regenstein will be moved to the east side of the 2nd floor, the new Current Periodicals Reading Room. With the exception of the area studies current periodicals in the 5th floor Reading Room, the new 2nd floor Reading Room will house over 6,000 current periodicals in call number order, allowing you to browse journals within a discipline.
- 6/25/03: Duct and Cover(t), an exhibition of photographs and personal reactions to the War in Iraq by advanced photography students at the University's Laboratory Schools, has been extended. The exhibition will remain on display on the Regenstein first floor through August 15.

- 5/29/03: The following six restrooms in Regenstein will be closed for renovation between June 16 and September 5: the two restrooms off the Special Collections exhibit corridor on the 1st floor, the two restrooms off the 2nd floor reading room, and the two restrooms off the A-level elevator lobby.
- 5/29/03: Marie Louise Rosenthal Seminar Room: Between June 16 and August 31, the Seminar Room in the Special Collections Research Center will be renovated. When completed, the room will offer state-of-the-art teaching technology and a greatly enhanced environment for classes using the rare books, manuscripts, and archival resources in the Center. This work is supported by a generous gift in honor of the late Marie Louise Rosenthal, a benefactor of the Library.
- 5/13/03: The Times Digital Archive contains facsimile images of articles, advertisements and illustrations/photos from The Times (London). Data will be added monthly until the entire period of 1785-1985 is available in late 2003.
- 5/12/03: Readers with laptops have long been able to access the campus network using the ethernet connections in the libraries via the network protocol DHCP (Dynamic Host Control Protocol). More recently, readers with laptops with appropriate compliant wireless card have been able to access the campus network via the wireless access points in the libraries. Effective May 13, NSIT will assume responsibility for managing all DHCP services in the libraries. As of that date, users who connect their laptops to the ethernet connections in the libraries will be required to authenticate themselves using their CNetID and password to access the data network.
- 05/07/03: Library Book Sale: The Spring book sale of more than 5,000 duplicate and discarded volumes will be held from Wednesday, May 7 through Saturday, May 10. Hours are 1:30 -- 3:30 p.m. Wednesday; 10 a.m. -- 3:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday; and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Prices start at $15 for hardbacks; $5 for paperbacks and miscellaneous material, and are reduced each day of the sale. On Saturday, all remaining books are free. The book sale room is located on the 1st floor of Regenstein in Room 120W.

- 4/28/03:This edition of American Film Scripts Online (AFSO) contains 135 scripts by 201 writers together with detailed, fielded information on the scenes, characters and people related to the scripts. When complete, the collection will include more than 1,000 scripts and over 100,000 scenes of life as portrayed in the movies.
- 4/23/03:The University of Chicago Library invites you to the 2003 Spring Information Fair on Wednesday, May 7th from 1-4 p.m. at the Joseph Regenstein Library and the John Crerar Library. The Library will be holding a variety of workshops, tours, and information sessions about our resources and services at both locations. Library staff members will also be on hand to provide information and answer your questions.
- 4/06/03: When complete, British and Irish Women's Letters and Diaries (1500-1900) will be the largest collection of British and Irish women's diaries and correspondence ever assembled. These writings bring us much more than the personal. They provide a detailed record of what women wore, the conditions under which they worked, what they ate, what they read, and how they amused themselves. We can see how frequently they attended church, how they viewed their connection to God, and how they prayed. We can explore their relationships with lovers and family and friends. For historians, sociologists, students of literature, and other researchers, BWLD will prove a dramatic new resource.
- 3/31/03: NSIT has recently implemented a number of wireless access points throughout Crerar. Campus users with PCs that are capable of communicating using IEEE 802.11b 11Mbps wireless technology and have web browsers capable of 128bit SSL encryption are able to authenticate with a valid CNetID and use the wireless network.
- 3/31/03: Biological Abstracts on Ovid has recently added backfiles, and coverage now begins with 1969.
- 3/31/03: Working with the College, the Library has provided temporary space in Harper Library for the University Book Exchange. The Exchange, located in the west tower conference room, provides a central location for students to buy and sell used textbooks.
- 3/19/03: The International Encyclopedia of the Social & Behavioral Sciences is now available online to University users via Science Direct.
- 3/19/03: Computer terminals that provide access to the Online Catalog are now available on the upper stacks floors in the Regenstein. These workstations should assist readers working in the book stacks who need to check a call number, an item's status, etc. Electronic resources cannot be accessed from these machines.
- 3/13/03:WebStations have recently been added to the Regenstein A-level reading room. In addition, 15 WebStations are deployed by NSIT on the 1st, 2nd and 4th floors of the Regenstein. Users with a valid CNetID can log in and quickly check email and surf the web without waiting for a library computer to become available. Printing is not supported from these stations.
- 3/06/03: Encyclopaedia Iranica is now also available online to University users. Prepared by Columbia University's Center for Iranian Studies, this multi-disciplinary reference work and research tool is designed to record the facts of Iranian history and civilization.
- 3/06/03: Between the Boards: Collections, Compilations, and Curiosities from the John Crerar Collection of Rare Books in the History of Science and Medicine is now on display in the gallery of the Special Collections Research Center. With support from University Trustee Harvey Plotnick, the Library recently completed a project to catalog the collection and provide information about its approximately 20,000 titles on international databases. The exhibit focuses on lesser-known works, in particular examples of previously unrecorded titles discovered during the cataloging project and books that reveal how a bound volume can serve as an active agent in collecting and classifying knowledge.
- 2/25/03:The Business & Economics Resource Center has moved and merged with the Regenstein Reference and Information Center. The new department, the Reference & Business Information Center (RBIC), is located on the 1st floor of Regenstein.
- 2/19/03: The Conference Board's Research Database is a searchable file of full-text research reports on the latest issues in business management and US and global economics. Proprietary, nonbiased research includes studies of Fortune 500 companies on business trends, leadership decisions, performance excellence, corporate governance, human resources, productivity, customer relationship management and more. Economics material includes US and global economic indicators and analysis and forecasts of regional, national, and international economic conditions. Full-text coverage begins with 1995.
- 2/19/03:The Washington Post,The Washington Post, 1877-1987, is now included in ProQuest's Historical Newspapers Collection. It offers full page and article images with searchable full text back to the first issue. The collection includes digital reproductions and provides access to every page from every available issue.
- 2/19/03: Chopin Early Editions, a new digital collection, is now available. Users can search or browse the collection via a variety of data points, including titles, genres, plate numbers, publishers and place of publication. Access to individual scores is also available through records in the Library Catalog with links to the Web site.

- 01/30/03: The Library is pleased to announce the 14th annual competition for the T. Kimball Brooker Prize for undergraduate book collectors. A $1,000 prize will be awarded to a 4th-year student and a $500 prize to a 2nd-year. Details are available on-line at:

If you any other type of information please contact me. - 1/29/03: SFX-enabled databases now include a link that allows faculty, students and staff to request articles through Interlibrary Loan. Included are databases produced by EbscoHost, OCLC, OVID, and Web of Science. Users who click on the SFX link when viewing an article citation will see a "Request document via Interlibrary Loan" option among their choices (assuming full-text of the article is not available through an SFX link). Choosing the Interlibrary Loan option will bring up an ILL article request form with information about the article already filled out. Users will simply need to complete the "Patron Information" section of the form and indicate the date by which they need the article. This machine allows you to scan a microfilm or microfiche image and to save the scanned files to a zip disk. The computer workstation, which is attached to the MS400 machine, is a stand alone machine and uses Image.SCAN software. For additional information, please click here.

- 1/06/03: All Night Study Space is again available in the A-level Reading Room of Regenstein from 1 a.m. to 8 a.m. Monday through Friday during Winter Quarter.
- 1/06/03: Effective with the start of Winter Quarter, the Library has changed when it sends notices for overdue material. In addition, borrowers who owe the Library $100 or more are not allowed to borrow from the libraries' collections until these charges are resolved. Current and former students who owe the Library $100 or more at the end of the sixth week of the quarter will be restricted with the University Registrar, which will prevent future enrollment and access to other University services (including transcript requests) until these charges are paid.
