11/19/04: Journals in the Catalog now display the SFX button which can link users to full text databases to which the Library subscribes. Previously, this service was only available via the Library web site's E-Journals list. Ask for more details about this new feature at the nearest reference desk.
10/25/04: Attend "Things that Go Bump in the Stacks" at the
Special Collections Research Center in Regenstein Library, Friday,
October 29th, from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. In celebration of Halloween, you
are invited to join the Class Librarians for a special showing of some
of the rare and unique items that haunt the shelves of the Special
Collections Research Center. After viewing some garish ghosts, gory ghouls, and macabre monsters, join us for a snack (if you still have the stomach for it). Or you can head out for a trick-or-treating adventure to other eerie Library locations.

10/20/04: Six Regenstein restrooms -- those off the 3rd, 4th, and 5th floor reading rooms -- have reopened following their renovation. Support for this project was made possible with income from the Joseph Regenstein Library Building Maintenance Fund, a building endowment.
10/11/04: Effective October 18, $50 copycards can only be
purchased from Copico or Crerar Circulation with "POPS Orders" using
the Purchase Order Processing System. Interdepartmental order form 62

10/4/04: Explore the Library's newest digital collections,
Archival Photofiles
and A Century of Progress:
The 1933-34 World's Fair. Archival Photofiles is
part of an initiative to digitize and present on the Web a collection
of over 60,000 photographs in the Special Collection Research Center
that document the history of the University, the campus, academic
programs, and community life. The initial digital collection provides
images of photographs in Series II: Buildings and Grounds. A Century of Progress: The
1933-34 World's Fair makes available digitally 350 of the Fair's publications, most of which are housed in the Special Collections Research Center. Also available is a searchable database of the Checklist of Fair Publications compiled by John Crerar Library staff shortly after the Fair closed.
10/4/04: The August Addendum
to the Library Shelving Facility Study is available to the
University community. Written by Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and
Abbott, a Boston architectural firm, the addendum presents costs and
diagrams for on-campus addition options to Regenstein, including a 2
million volume compact shelving facility, a 2.9 million volume hybrid
facility (a combination of compact shelving and an automated storage
and retrieval -- ASR -- system), and a 3.5 million volume ASR system
facility. All reports relating to the Library Shelving Facility study
can be found online. For

Checked Out? Not on the Shelf? If you're unable to find an
item with the status "Not Checked Out" at the location indicated in
the catalog record, you can now submit a search request online.
Simply click on the link "Not on Shelf?" next to the circulation status
of the item in the catalog record and complete the search form. Staff
will search for the item and if found, tell you where you can pick it up and how long it will be held. Staff will also notify you if the item cannot be found.
9/13/04: To create additional growth space to accommodate new print material in Regenstein, all Chicago dissertations in Regenstein have been pulled from the stacks and are now shelved separately in one call number sequence in the A-level reading room.
9/13/04: The exhibit Catalyst for
Change 1970-2004: On the Occasion of Martin Runkle's Retirement as
Library Director is now on display in the Special Collections
Research Center Main Gallery through October 7. In honor of Martin
Runkle's retirement as Director of the Library, this exhibition
presents an informal visual record of selected highlights of Library
history during his tenure. Photographs in the exhibition are the work
of Beverly Sperring.
7/7/04: Gale's Eighteenth Century Collections Online (ECCO) is now available to University users. When completed, ECCO will be a comprehensive digital edition of The Eighteenth Century microfilm set, which has aimed to include every significant English-language and foreign-language title printed in the United Kingdom, along with thousands of important works from the Americas, between 1701 and 1800. Upon completion, the full collection will include nearly 150,000 titles and more than 33 million pages of searchable material.
7/7/04:Index to Printed Music is now available online to University users. This reference source allows you to locate individual pieces of music printed in standard scholarly editions and various anthologies. The database allows searching by composer, geographical area, time or style period, and by original source. This resource is restricted to one user at a time. Accordingly, please log off when you have completed searching.
6/25/04: The Library Shelving
Facility Study Report is available to the University community.
Written by Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott, a Boston
architectural firm, the report presents conceptual plans for an
on-site shelving addition to Regenstein and an off-site shelving
facility and evaluates and compares cost estimates for each
alternative. Additional shelving space is vital for the Library, as
the total shelving in the libraries on the campus, including Harper
Storage, will be filled to capacity by the end of 2007. For

6/21/04: Staff are working in the Regenstein bookstacks
this summer to create additional collection growth space to
accommodate new print material. Collections are being shifted on the
3rd and 5th floors. Beginning June 21, LC classed D-DA, DT1-39,
DT331-3415, DU and DX material will be moved from the 5th floor stacks
to a temporary location in the 2nd floor stacks. In mid-September,
after the 3rd floor stacks have been shifted, this material will be
moved to its new home on the 3rd floor and shelved after the LC
classed C's.

K.G. Saur's Biographical Archives is available on a trial basis to
University users until July 15, 2004. Please send us your comments about this product.
6/15/04:images.MD, an online encyclopedia of over 50,000 medical images from more than 90 collections and 2,000 contributors, is now available to University users.
6/15/04: University users have trial access until October 1
to the American Psychological Association's PsychEXTRA database. A companion to the scholary PsycINFO database, PsychEXTRA supplies clinicians, information professionals, policy-makers, researchers, and consumers with a wide variety of credible information in psychology, behavioral science, and health. Most of the coverage is material written for professionals and disseminated outside of peer-reviewed journals. PsycEXTRA is different from PsycINFO in its coverage, and also in its format, because it includes abstracts and citations plus full text for a major portion of the records. There is no overlap with PsycINFO.
6/15/04: The following six restrooms in Regenstein will be
closed for renovation between June 17 and September 10: the two
restrooms off the 3rd floor reading room; the two restrooms off the
4th floor reading room; and the two restrooms off the 5th floor
reading room.

6/1/04: The U. S. Congressional Serial Set is now available to the University community through Lexis-Nexis Congressional Universe. This resource includes the full text of the American State Papers and the Serial Set, and when completed by December of 2005, it will cover the years 1789 to 1969.
5/24/04: Wireless networking is now available in the East
Asia reading room on the 5th floor of Regenstein. For information
about wireless and its location in the libraries and elsewhere on
campus, please click here.
5/24/04: Much of the Chicago Tribune, specifically the
years 1890 -- 1946, is now available online to the University community as part of the Proquest Historical Newspapers collection. This resource offers full page and article images with searchable full text. The collection includes digital reproductions providing access to every page from every available issue.
5/10/04: Replacement of the Library's Public Workstations: The Library is currently in the process of replacing the public computers in all libraries. The new computers are significantly faster, have USB ports and adjustable flat panel monitors, as well as head phone jacks. Upgrades in Crerar and Eckhart have been done, and staff is currently working to replace computers in Regenstein. The project should be completed by the end of June. If you have questions or comments about the new computers, please contact us.

4/13/04: Library Survey. Selected members of the

4/12/04: Louis Armstrong Centennial exhibit: In 2001,
Symphony Center mounted an exhibit to celebrate the centennial of
Louis Armstrong's birth. The Chicago Jazz Archive in Regenstein
provided some of the photographs and sources used in the panels
included in the exhibit. The panels were recently donated to the
Chicago Jazz Archive and are now on display on the first floor of
Regenstein.
4/9/04: The Library is proud to announce that a new
endowment has been established to honor the profound legacy of Jock
Weintraub, the Thomas E. Donnelley Distinguished Service Professor
Emeritus. Friends and students are invited to offer their respects by

4/5/04: Try the Library's new and enhanced electronic
resources database. In addition to the alphabetical listing, the new
database offers a far more comprehensive listing of subjects to
select, and it also allows you to browse by both subject or resource
type and to identify databases by combining subject and resource type.
For example, you can search for electronic books in philosophy or
indexes to articles in physics. A brief description is now included
for each database to improve access, and you can search the full
record by keyword. Both the new test database and our current A to Z
listing of electronic resources are available on the Library web site. We are
continuing to refine and improve the new database, and we welcome your
comments
and suggestions.
2/16/04:Readers' Guide
Retrospective indexes the most popular general-interest
periodicals published in the United States and reflects the history of
20th century America. Current coverage for this database includes the years 1890 through 1982.
2/16/04:Literature Online is a fully searchable library of more than 350,000 works of English and American poetry, drama and prose, 123 full-text literature journals, and other key criticism and reference resources.

2/5/04: An information
session for the T.
Kimball Brooker Prize for Undergraduate Book Collecting will be
held Wednesday, February 11 at 4:30 p.m. The session will be held in
the Gallery of the Special Collections Research Center, Regenstein
Library. Alice Schreyer, the Director of the Center, will discuss book
collecting and the Brooker Prize, after which refreshments will be
served.
2/3/04: The Library's new Interlibrary
Loan Request System on the Web is now configured to work with SFX in all library databases that are OpenURL enabled. FirstSearch databases (including WorldCat) have also been given links to the new Interlibrary Loan Request System on the Web that replace the old ILL request option formerly used.
1/29/04: Love in the Stacks: Looking for a LOVELY study break? Want to get in

1/9/04: In conjunction with the opening of the
exhibit Honest Jim: James D. Watson the Writer in the John Crerar Library, James Watson, a university graduate and co-winner of the 1962 Nobel Prize in Medicine for the discovery of the structure of DNA, will be giving a lecture in the Biological Sciences Learning Center on January 19 at 4 p.m. This will be followed at 5:30 p.m. by a reception in the Crerar atrium. system allows you to initiate and track your own interlibrary
loan requests from any web browser. After creating a user
profile, you will not need to supply contact information when
