Opera del Vocabolario Italiano (02/2006)

This is a beta-test release of the OVI database under ARTFL's new version of PhiloLogic. The database contains 110 new documents, totalling 1,960 vernacular texts (22.3 million words, 456,000 unique forms) the majority of which are dated prior to 1375, the year of Boccaccio's death. The new version of PhiloLogic supports many new search and reporting features, including Access to the database is provided to both ARTFL subscribers and OVI registered users (the same passwords are installed) from the single search form.

This is a test installation. Please report problems to Mark Olsen (mark@barkov.uchicago.edu) and include OVI, PhiloLogic or my full name the body of your e-mail (to evade my spam filter).

A few more details. The data from the OVI was converted to our SGML notation using a package developed by Christian Dupont and loaded under PhiloLogic3 using a slightly modified textloader. I tried to configure the database to provide the same functionality, text display, and access limits as before, but you may notice differences. The database is running on our new Macintosh Xserve cluster, which should also provide some performance improvements.

Future development plans. In conjunction with Domenico Iorio-Fili and Andrea Boccellari of the OVI, we hope to include surface form lemma searching in a future release. The ARTFL Project is planning an upgrade release of PhiloLogic in March 2006 and then will begin work on an an internationalized version of the system, to support French, Italian, Spanish and other languages for the interface.

Again, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions, bug reports or other concerns.
