Prospectus
The current "Alpha" version of the Bayle Database will undergo significant changes in the future. The ARTFL Project
will be implementing the following changes as they are completed:
-
Data Restructuring:
The next implementation of the Bayle Database will include a restructured note system wherein the Remarks (called by
capital letters - (A), (B), etc.), the bibliographic citations from the Articles (small letters (a), (b), etc.) and
citations from the Remarks (roman numerals (1), (2), etc.) will be treated as separate text objects, allowing one to search
only in Articles or only in Remarks and not Notes, etc.
-
Cross-Referencing Experimentation:
Thanks to the important work of Professor H. H. M. Van Lieshout in her book The Making of Pierre Bayle's Dictionaire
Historique et Critique we would like to integrate her data concerning the Bibliographic citations of the
Dictionnaire as well as a complete list of Cross-References between Articles in the text.
-
Corrections Project:
We have begun to identify and correct many of the typographical errors introduced during data-capture - some 48,000
corrections have already been made.
- Future corrections:
The next steps in the corrections project will include: Hand corrections made to unrecognizable words and letters
currently represented by the "$" character as well as corrections made to typhographical errors not corrected during the
automatic corrections mentioned above. The ARTFL Project hopes to begin hand corrections of the Bayle Project by Spring
2006.
Current State of the Project:
Alpha version 1. The data entry process has been completed on the entire 4 volumes of the
Dictionnaire historique et crtitique with
corresponding page images from the 1740 edition - the full-text of these volumes is searchable using the PhiloLogic3 search engine.
Current functionality:
- Full-text searches for:
- words
- phrases
- co-occurences of words
- word or phrase frequency by article
- a similarity search is also available for full-text searches
- Find Articles by Headword
- Articles can be located by either searching in the Headword search box, or by browsing the entire list of Headwords
using the "Terms" button on the search form.
- Hyperlinks to notes
- Currently, notes that are called in the text can be accessed by clicking on their hyperlinks. N.B. -
all notes are linked in the same manner, whether they be Remarks (indicated by Capital Letter links); bibliographic
citations from the articles (indicated by small letters); or bibliographic citations from the Remarks (indicated by
numbers).
- Links to page images from Articles
- Users can access the original page images from the 1740 edition of the Dictionnaire by clicking on the page
number link at the beginning of each Article entry.
Alpha Version 2.
Along with the above functionality, we have restructed the data to include both the Remarks and Bibliographic citations as
seperate objects extracted from the
Articles. This will allow users to search for words in complete Articles (with Remarks and Notes) or only in Articles
and/or Remarks and Notes. See the Alpha V.2 Searchform for more information.
