24 July 1749, Diderot is arrested and imprisoned at Vincennes
as author of the Lettre sur les aveugles à l'usage de
ceux qui voient. His publishers, Le Breton, David l'aîné,
Durand and Briasson, immediately contact officials in an attempt to
obtain his release. They first gained greater freedom for Diderot in
prison, including the right to receive visitors, and finally his
liberation, 3 November 1749. The following documents record their efforts.
