Accessing Library Course Reserve Materials

1. How do I access course reserve readings?

   To view course reserve lists and and electronic reserve materials, simply go to http://chalk.uchicago.edu and log in with your CNetID and password. You'll see your classes listed under the "My Classes" heading. If you follow the link for a spe cific class, you'll find that "Library Course Reserves" will appear as a link in the maroon frame at the left side of the page. Following that link will lead to a listing of the course reserve materials currently available through the Library.
   
   Materials that are permanently on reserve can be accessed through the Permanent Reserves page.
   

2. What should I do if I'm having difficulty logging in with my CNetID and password?

   Visit http://cnet.uchicago.edu/ for information on re-certifying your CNetID or contact the ID and Privileges Office in Regenstein Library for assistance.

3. How do I report a problem with accessing course reserves?

   Send an email to e-reserves@lib.uchicago.edu.

4. Who can access electronic reserves and other materials placed on course reserve at the Library?

   Electronic reserves are restricted to the students and faculty for whom the material has been placed on reserve. Books and other printed course reserve materials may be checked out by anyone with a University of Chicago ID and can be found in the Library main catalog through an author or title search. Access to lists of material on reserve for a course are restricted to the students and instructors affiliated with the course.

5. Why is the Library making course reserve lists and electronic reserves available through Chalk?

   There are several reasons:

   • The Office of Legal Counsel has advised the Library to restrict access to electronic reserve materials to those students and faculty affiliated with the course for which the material is on reserve. The Chalk course management system provides an effective means for restricting materials to those for whom it is intended without creating burdensome work for staff or causing delays in reserve processing.
   • The Chalk interface makes it easier for students to find reserve materials. A recent survey of students found that many had difficulty locating materials in the Library reserve catalog using the Course and Instructor indexes. Chalk makes it easier for students to find reserve materials by showing them only classes for which they are registered.
   • Since many instructors are now using Chalk to provide course materials, making course reserve materials available through Chalk allows students to find most of their course materials in a single place.
     
     

6. How do I find more information about using Chalk?

   Either visit the Chalk information page or contact Chalk support staff at chalk@uchicago.edu or Regenstein Library, Room 220.

7. Whom do I contact for information about placing new materials on course reserve?

   The contacts vary based on the course's subject area:

   • Regenstein Library maintains course reserves for courses in the humanities and social sciences.
   • Crerar Library maintains course reserves for courses in the sciences and medicine.
   • D'Angelo Law Library maintains course reserves for law courses.
   • Eckhart Library maintains course reserves for courses in mathematics and computer science.
   • SSA Library maintains course reserves for courses in Social Services Administration.
