Horizon and Horizon Information Portal (HIP) Indexes:
Data Sources
The following tables document Horizon
and HIP index data sources: the MARC bibliographic records, the
MARC authority records, and non-MARC data elements from other
Horizon records.
*The Course Reserve Catalog (profile=ucres) exists, but is no longer publicly accessible. The course reserve indexes in Horizon still exist, but all reserve processing has shifted to Ares, so the indexes (and the Horizon course reserve module) are no longer used.

General
Information
Horizon keyword indexes are unique to
Horizon. HIP keyword indexes are unique to HIP. Horizon and HIP
share some browse and numeric indexes.
Browse and numeric indexes:
(1) incorporate all records
including those marked staff-only; or
(2) incorporate all records except those marked
staff-only.
The latter indexes are marked in
Horizon as "public" and some of these are also used in HIP.

below for comparative data on browse and numeric indexes.
HIP keyword indexes
exclude any staff-only records. Horizon keyword
indexes, because of their limited use, are NOT documented here.
MARC bibliographic and authority records are the primary data
sources for the indexes. The following tables provide MARC field
and subfield tags as well as a label that describes the data. If
you need more information on MARC, check The
Cataloger's Desktop or go to: http://www.loc.gov/marc . Other
Horizon indexes use other records and these are indicated below as
well.
In the following tables:
1. m_m = marc_map (a Horizon table that identifies the MARC
fields/subfields used to generate an index--for security reasons,
generally restricted to ILS staff)
2. bt = base table (the primary Horizon table in which record
data is stored--for security reasons, generally restricted to LS
staff)
3. AE = added entry
4. OBSOLETE = the MARC field tag/subfield is no longer valid,
usually because the data defined for it originally was later
incorporated into another field/subfield. Our MARC database,
because of its age, may still have obsolete fields in MARC
records.

HIP Indexes
The Horizon Information Portal (HIP)
provides us with our online catalog. We have defined several
profiles of the catalog, each with its own list of indexes, labels,
displays, etc. Currently, there are three major profiles in
use:
Main Catalog: ucpublic
(default)
http://www.lib.uchicago.edu/h/1
Main Catalog: ucstaff (essentially identical to ucpublic except
that it has additional indexes of interest to staff)
http://www.lib.uchicago.edu/h/3
Reserve Catalog: ucres (contains only
instructor and course indexes)--NO LONGER PUBLICLY ACCESSIBLE
http://www.lib.uchicago.edu/h/2
Unless otherwise indicated, the
following indexes appear in both ucpublic and ucstaff. All HIP
browse and numeric indexes are shared with Horizon; see the table below for
comparative data on Horizon and HIP indexes. This table lists
additional alpha browse indexes containing staff-only records
available in the ucstaff profile; the indexing information on
staff-only indexes is included in the section on Horizon Indexes.
Search limits are part of the HIP
keyword indexing structure. Go here for information on
how search limits are defined.

Horizon Indexes
Horizon indexes are used in the Horizon
staff client. Depending upon your most frequent online functions,
you can choose from three different "PAC Flavors": AcqPAC, SerPAC,
StaffPAC (aka "New Search"). Each of the flavors lists the indexes
in different order; AcqPAC and SerPAC list only selected indexes.
StaffPAC includes all available indexes. Some Horizon browse and
numeric indexes are shared with HIP; see the table below for comparative
data.
