Videos for Teenagers and Adults

Training Wheels -- July, 1995

In the Spring Illinois Bicyclist, we featured educational videos for grade school cyclists. There are also excellent videos available for teen-agers and adults, some of which we'll describe in this article.
Videos for Teenagers and Adults

Bicycle Safety First produced by Tim Kneeland & Associates is an excellent short (13 minute) overview of topics ranging from bike fit and riding in traffic to how to dress and eat on a ride. It's a great introduction for potential serious adult or older teen riders. ($23.95 from LAB.)

Effective Cycling -- the video version of John Forester's book, the main message of which is,"Cyclists fare best when they act, and are treated, as operators of vehicles." This "textbook" of bicycling offers older teens and adults instruction on how to ride further, faster, safer, and more confidently, anywhere. Especially valuable are lessons on riding in traffic. At 41 minutes, this tape is too long and detailed to show to audiences that do not have a vested interest in cycling. ($29.99 from Ride Safe ; $29.95 from LAB)

Trucks and Bicycles Sharing the Road, a twenty minute, two-part video designed to provide bicyclists with an overview of riding safely on the roads, and to help sensitize drivers of motor vehicles, especially truckers, to the needs and rights by law of bicyclists. It appeals to both cyclists and truck drivers through narration by Michael Secrest, RAAM winner and professional truck driver. ($24.99 from Ride Safe; $20.95 from LAB)

The Ride Safe Way to Fit a Bicycle Helmet -- This eight minute message is important for adults as well as kids! ($14.99 from Ride Safe; $11.95 from LAB)

The Law is for All -- Unlike the videos described above this is not a tape which instructs the viewer in safe riding behavior; it is, instead, a tool for bicycling advocates to encourage police officers to enforce traffic laws in regard to bicyclists, with an emphasis on children. The 11-minute tape, produced by Trooper Don Reed of the Michigan State Police (and LAB award winner), is designed for police officers and is not meant to be shown to the general public. ($14.95 from LAB).
