Library expands open access publishing options with Brill, De Gruyter, and SPIE

The University of Chicago Library continues to enter into transformative agreements—also known as Read and Publish agreements—that allow UChicago students, faculty, and staff to publish their research as open access without needing to pay article processing charges (APCs). These agreements, covering journals in many disciplines across the humanities, sciences, and social sciences, demonstrate the Library's commitment to open, equitable, and worldwide access to the University's research and scholarly work.

The Brill Agreement

UChicago Library has recently signed an agreement with the publisher Brill to provide unlimited Library-funded open access publishing for all Brill Hybrid and Gold OA journals. This agreement applies to all University of Chicago faculty, students, and staff who are the corresponding author of an article within a Brill Hybrid or Gold OA journal. All manuscripts accepted for publication from January 2022 will be flipped to open access with a Creative Commons Attribution License (CC-BY).

As part of this agreement, the University of Chicago gains access to 219 additional Brill journals. Faculty, students, and staff will have full open access publishing rights to journals included in the agreement without needing to pay APCs.

The De Gruyter Agreement

The Library’s Read and Publish Agreement with De Gruyter provides unlimited Library-funded open access publishing in De Gruyter Hybrid journals, as well as access to 273 additional De Gruyter journals. This agreement applies to corresponding authors of an article within a De Gruyter Hybrid journal with a manuscript that was accepted on or after July 1, 2022. Note that this agreement does not currently include open access publishing in De Gruyter’s gold open access journals.

The SPIE Digital Library Agreement

The SPIE Digital Library Agreement provides unlimited Library-funded open access publishing in 13 of 14 SPIE Digital Library journals. All manuscripts submitted to SPIE for publication by University of Chicago corresponding authors on or after July 1, 2022, will be published with a CC-BY license. Please note that Photonics Insights does not include open access publishing through our current agreement.
