Library waives fines incurred before September 15

Lost item fees remain in effect but will be waived when books are returned

As a one-time courtesy to our patrons, all outstanding fines owed to the Library incurred prior to September 15, 2021, will be waived for both current and past borrowers.

Lost item fee charges for long overdue items will remain on borrowers’ accounts. When patrons return lost items, the Library will waive the lost item fees associated with those items.

Interlibrary Loan items no longer receive overdue fines

Starting Autumn Quarter, the Library's overdue fine policies have been updated.

Overdue fines for items borrowed via Interlibrary Loan have been eliminated, matching the policy for standard loans from UChicago Library collections. The majority of loaned items will therefore not accrue overdue fines.

Only a few overdue fines will be charged in the future

The Library will continue to charge overdue fines for items on physical reserve, items recalled from patrons’ accounts, legal materials on 7-day loan from Mansueto, and non-circulating items that have been loaned as a special exception.

Any items that are long overdue will be charged a lost item fee if not returned. Returning lost items will automatically waive the lost item fee.
