Renovations in Regenstein

The University of Chicago Library is moving forward with its plan to build a home for the Center for Digital Scholarship on Regenstein’s First Floor. As a step toward creating this new home, construction will soon begin on the A Level and 2nd and 3rd Floors to relocate Library staff and services.

Schedule

Construction is expected to start in August and be completed in November. During most of the project, working hours will be 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. However, work will take place in the evenings and on weekends occasionally as needed.

Areas of work

On the A Level, construction will take place along the east wall of the Reading Room adjacent to the One Button Studio.

On the 2nd Floor, the Librarians’ Offices in rooms 260 through 263 will be closed.

On the 3rd Floor, the Librarians’ Offices in rooms 360 through 363 will be closed and a section of the east aisle of the bookstacks will be restricted.

On the A Level, a temporary wall will be constructed along the east wall of the Reading Room. In addition to this wall, floor protection will extend from the entrance to the A Level Reading Room to the work area.

On the 2nd and 3rd Floors, a temporary partition will be placed around the offices. The printer/copier near the Bookstacks elevator will be relocated to the Reading Rooms. On the 3rd Floor, a partition will be set up in the bookstacks near the caged area by the 3rd Floor Librarian offices. There will be noise at times between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

Services

As part of the renovation, librarians have been temporarily relocated. Please consult the Library Staff Directory for updated office locations. The printer/copiers on the 2nd and 3rd floors will be relocated to their respective Reading Rooms near the main elevators. Access to the east aisle to some materials with call numbers in the PQs and PNs in the 3rd Floor Bookstacks will be restricted. Patrons may access these sections of the stacks from the west aisle. As construction progresses, some services may be relocated. Please check posted signage for updates.

Please contact John Carey, Director of Building Services & Operations, with any questions regarding construction. Please “Ask a Librarian” to get answers regarding services or other concerns.
