University printing service migration starts Dec. 14
Starting Saturday, December 14, University of Chicago IT Services will begin migrating campus printing services to a new system with lower prices and free scanning. This migration will affect printing, copying, and scanning services at all campus libraries, including a period during which printing will be unavailable to all users. Please note the migration does not affect Law School managed equipment at the D'Angelo Law Library.
Printing will be restored in stages, with UChicago students receiving first priority.
Visit printing.uchicago.edu for the most current information about what printing services are available.
Printing in libraries unavailable during winter interim (Dec. 14 – Jan. 5)
Printing will be temporarily unavailable to all users at all campus libraries starting Saturday, December 14. The copy/print/scan machines in libraries will be replaced with new equipment that supports the new printing system. IT Services will then work with its supplier to migrate student accounts to the new system.
Changes to student printing starting January 6
On January 6, the student printing system will be upgraded with several changes to enhance the printing experience:
- New payment method: Phoenix cASH will replace PayPal. Visit the Office of the Bursar’s website to learn more about Phoenix cASH and how to add funds to your account.
- PayPal balances: Remaining PayPal balances cannot be transferred to the new printing system. Instructions for requesting a refund or unused balances will be shared soon.
- Lower printing costs (the same rate applies to all paper sizes):
- black and white prints: $0.09 per page
- color prints: $0.15 per page
- Free scanning
The functionality and support that the current system provides will remain the same, and all current printing locations will still be supported. Onsite support, personnel, and hours will not change.
Visit the onsite support desk located on the 1st floor of Regenstein Library for assistance or further information.
Printing for faculty, staff, and Library visitors
Once students have been successfully migrated to the new system, IT Services will begin making the new system available to faculty, staff, and Library visitors. The timeline for when each of these groups will be able to use the new system is currently unknown. For now, Library patrons other than students should plan alternatives to Library copy/print/scan machines.
Scan & Deliver and Course Reserves services for UChicago students, faculty, and staff
University of Chicago students, faculty, and staff may use the Library’s Scan & Deliver service to request scans of book chapters and journal articles.
Faculty and instructors preparing for Winter Quarter teaching are encouraged to use the Library’s Course Reserves service to request scans of chapters or articles needed for Winter courses.
Library scanning equipment
All Library users will have access to scanning equipment, which can be used to save files that can be printed elsewhere. Regenstein’s 3rd floor reading room has an overhead book scanner as well as a flatbed scanner in the northeast corner near the Microforms Collection.
Library users may also use personal devices, such as smartphones and cameras, to scan material.
Library visitors will need to request a computer login from the Regenstein Circulation desk in order to use scanning equipment.
Printing options outside the Library
Faculty and staff will be able to print using their department’s printing options during the transition.
Visitors will need to print elsewhere. The Chicago Public Library offers printing at all of its locations.
