The Library is offering workshops throughout Winter Quarter highlighting research tools, methodologies, and resources. Registration is recommended; select the workshop date to register.

Unable to attend a workshop? Our librarians provide guidance and research support for specific majors and disciplines. We also have librarians with expertise in GIS, data, scholarly communication, digital humanities, etc. Find your expert and schedule an appointment.

Spatial Data: What is it and How to Find It?
January 9, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Learn the core concepts of utilizing spatial data with this two part workshop. No previous experience required. This workshop will introduce the different formats spatial data can take and how they are utilized within GIS. The workshop will cover where to find and how to process spatial data from open online sources. We will also address managing spatial data and the resources available on and off campus.

All About EndNote

EndNote is a research management tool used to keep track of citations and PDFs, and create formatted bibliographies as you write your paper. In this workshop, learn how to use the desktop version of EndNote. Topics covered include: creating and managing citation libraries, importing citations from online databases and other sources, importing and managing PDFs and creating bibliographies.

Navigating ArcGIS for Desktop

ArcGIS for Desktop is the predominant proprietary geographic information systems (GIS) software. This workshop will introduce you to digital mapping in ArcGIS. The session will cover software navigation, spatial data visualization, and creating your first map.

PubMed and Pizza

Explore the redesigned PubMed interface, the default interface in Spring 2020, as you learn how to perform effective searches on a topic, quickly find a specific article, register for a My NCBI account to set up your own preferences, and more. This session is for new and experienced PubMed users. Enjoy a slice of pizza as you explore PubMed.

Data and Donuts: Introduction to R

This workshop will teach you how to get started with R, an open source programming language and environment for statistical computing and graphics. The session will include a tour of RStudio, a software client for using R, and an activity that covers data exploration, graphing, and analysis. Introduction to Zotero

Learn how to use Zotero, a free citation manager that allows you to save and organize citation information while searching and browsing the Web. With a single click, Zotero saves citations and enables you to create bibliographies in popular citation styles.

Introduction to ICPSR

This workshop will teach you how to get started with ICPSR (the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research). ICPSR is one of the largest social sciences data archives in the world. During the session, participants will learn how to create an account, browse and search for data, and download datasets. The session will also cover best practices for finding and evaluating datasets. Please bring a laptop to the session (available at the TechBar).

Introduction to LaTeX with Overleaf: Documents and Bibliographies

This workshop is an introduction to the LaTeX typesetting language through Overleaf, an online collaborative LaTeX editor. In this workshop we will cover document structure and commonly used syntax. Basic commands will also be introduced.

Georeferencing in ArcGIS Online

Learn how to georeference images using ArcGIS. Georeferencing assigns geographic coordinates to a digital image so that it overlays a real world location. Using this method, you will place historical maps and aerial photography onto modern maps. No GIS experience required. We will begin with an introduction to GIS and the software ArcGIS. Then the workshop will explore how to georeference an image by adding latitude and longitude coordinates and then by using the landscape.

Building Digital Collections for Research

LaTeX Basics with Overleaf: Mathematical Equations and Formulas

This workshop provides an introduction to typesetting math using LaTeX. We will cover how to create equations and formulas, subscripting and superscripting and other commonly used syntax for math. We will be using the Overleaf software for this workshop.

Navigating Social Explorer

Social Explorer is a platform for creating interactive maps that explore data from the U.S. Census and the American Community Survey.
