Latin American and Caribbean Studies Librarian
The University of Chicago Library seeks an innovative, service-oriented librarian to deliver research services to scholars and to promote digital scholarship, including data management and literacy and use of digital tools and resources. The Librarian will work collaboratively with colleagues to develop physical and digital collections and other resources that cross disciplinary boundaries and support new areas of inquiry. With the Library's Center for Digital Scholarship, they will build coordinated services and develop relationships with faculty and students. Through the University's Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS), they will engage with scholars to identify opportunities to promote and develop services and share expertise in emerging methods of scholarship.
The Library seeks candidates who can help transform instruction, outreach, reference, and collections, and who are creative in solving problems in a collaborative environment.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Reporting to the Co-Associate University Librarian for Research and Learning, the Librarian will develop print and digital collections to support scholarship and teaching; provide specialized instructional and research services, consultations on scholarly communication issues and practices in digital scholarship; work with the Center for Digital Scholarship to support evolving needs of relevant user communities in conducting digital scholarship in Latin American/Caribbean studies; work with subject librarians to support students and faculty in research and teaching; contribute to overall reference and instruction for the Library; serve on committees; provide evening/weekend service as assigned; and engage in professional activities.
An MLS or MLIS from an accredited school of library information science or an advanced degree in Latin American Studies or related subject area, experience using digital scholarship methods and tools, and fluency in Spanish are required. Reading knowledge of Portuguese preferred.
The Search Committee will evaluate candidates' record and accomplishments to determine their knowledge of digital scholarship methodologies and tools; knowledge of trends and topics in current Latin American studies research; ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines; and effective oral and written communication skills. The Search Committee will also evaluate candidates' knowledge of resources for Latin American studies scholarship, knowledge of digital scholarship activities, and any advanced degrees.
