Slavic and Eastern European Studies Librarian

Position Description:
The University of Chicago Library seeks an innovative service-oriented librarian to develop and deliver research services to Slavic and Eastern European studies scholars. The Librarian will work with other subject librarians to develop scholarly collections and provide access to resources that cross traditional disciplinary boundaries and support new fields of inquiry. By building relationships and engaging with faculty, staff and students of The Center for East European, Russian and Eurasian Studies (CEERES), the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, and other academic programs, the Librarian will identify opportunities to promote and develop new library services and share expertise to support teaching, learning and research in Slavic and Eastern European studies.

The University of Chicago Library has nearly comprehensive collections in the areas of Russian, Czech and Slovak studies and collects at more basic levels in Polish, Hungarian, Romanian, Bulgarian, Albanian, Serbian/Croatian/Bosnian/Slovenian, Albanian, Greek, Romanian, and central Asian languages. Collections are concentrated in the humanities and social sciences with special strengths in major Russian authors, Slavic linguistics, women and gender studies, and Judaica. Another important resource is the Archive of Czechs and Slovaks Abroad (ACASA), a collection created by peoples who left their European homes to settle in other countries and consisting of diverse materials including books, diaries, letters, newsletters, and photographs.

Responsibilities and Duties

Reporting to the Library's Co-Associate University Librarian for Research and Learning, the Librarian will develop print and digital collections to support scholarship and teaching, provide advanced reference and research consultations, maintain online research guides, and offer instruction in Slavic and Eastern European studies. The Librarian may also be involved in outreach, instruction, and exhibits relating to archival and special collections and in digital initiatives. The Librarian will oversee the management of and provide research support for ACASA, collaborate with other subject liaisons to support students and faculty in interdisciplinary research and teaching, work collaboratively with the Center for Digital Scholarship, the Social Sciences Data Librarian, the Maps and GIS Librarian, and other colleagues to support evolving needs in digital scholarship in Slavic and Eastern European studies. The Librarian will contribute to overall reference, instruction and collection development (including some evening or weekend service) for the Library and serve on Library and University committees. Professional involvement with library and/or subject discipline organizations is expected.


Required: Master's degree from an ALA-accredited school of library information science and an advanced degree in Slavic and Eastern European studies subject area OR an advanced degree in the subject area and relevant library experience; fluency in Russian; effective oral and written communications skills in Russian and English; knowledge of trends and topics in Slavic and Eastern European studies research and of resources for Slavic and Eastern European studies scholarship

Preferred: Reading knowledge of one or more additional Eastern European languages; experience with creation of web content; teaching in a library or academic setting; experience using archives or libraries in Russia and Eastern Europe
