Title: Hanna Holborn Gray Graduate Student GIS Instruction Fellow

General Summary:

The GIS Instruction Fellow will provide instructional programming focusing on the introduction of spatial literacy and geospatial concepts. They will update existing instruction material and create resources in a variety of formats, including: demonstrations, workshops, tutorials, and web content. Instruction will focus on new GIS users interested in spatial literacy, data acquisition, available resources, and GIS processes, such as: georeferencing, digitizing, joining datasets, importing tabular data, and data management. For the foreseeable future, instructional programming will be delivered in a remote environment.

Duties:

  • Instruct hands-on workshops on spatial thinking, GIS software applications, and finding geospatial data using existing instructional materials
  • Refine existing and develop new instructional materials
  • Assist users with acquiring, manipulating, and querying geospatial data
  • Provide demonstrations of geospatial technology
  • Update online resources
  • Support MADD Center activities by understanding its operations and services
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a UChicago graduate program in good standing during the period of the fellowship
  • Demonstrated proficiency with GIS software (ArcGIS and QGIS) and techniques
  • Interest in pedagogy and instruction
  • Comfortable offering instruction and consultation in a remote environment
  • Geospatial or GIS instruction experience, preferred
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Hours and Schedule:

  • Approximately 15 hours/week

Stipend: $3300 for academic quarter (Autumn, Winter or Spring)

Start Date: Spring 2021 quarter
