History

Origin

The manuscript to which the present leaf belonged is judged to have been written in the 16th century, possibly on Crete.

Provenance

Provenance from the 16th to the mid-19th century unknown. Belonged to Rev. George Benton (died 1862), an Episcopal missionary, who brought the leaf to the United States in 1844 from Khaniá on the island of Crete. Bequeathed to his son, Rev. Angelo Ames Benton (1837-1912). Passed to A. A. Benton's son William Lane Hall Benton who presented the leaf ca. 1927, to Bishop W. Bertrand Stevens of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles, California.

Acquisition

Acquired by the University of Chicago with funds provided by Edgar J. Goodspeed, Professor Emeritus in the Divinity School, January 1948.
