Historical note

The Marcy-Newberry Association was formed from the Marcy Center and the Newberry Avenue Center. Marcy Center, founded in 1896, offered settlement house services to residents of the Maxwell Street neighborhood and later the Lawndale neighborhood in Chicago. By the 1950s, the Center was serving a primarily African American population. Newberry Avenue Center was founded in the 1930s in the original Marcy Center building. When Mexicans began to replace Jewish immigrants the Center offered religious services in Spanish once a week. Later, African Americans became the new constituency.

Arrangement note

The collection is divided into two series. Series I contains the records from the Marcy Center, both at its original location and after it moved to the Lawndale neighborhood. The Marcy Center Series consists of nine sub-series: Administrative Records, Board Materials, Community Fund Material, Financial Records, Programs, Personnel Records, Buildings and Building Services, Reference Materials, and Publicity, Publications, and Photographs. Some overlap occurred across sub-series and the researcher may need to consult file lists in several sub-series. The materials span the years from the founding of the organization in 1896 until 1968. The preponderance of material dates from the 1940s-1960s.

Series II contains the records from Newberry Center. It is divided into eight sub-series: Administrative Records, Financial Records, Programs, Group Work, Personnel Records, Buildings and Building Services, Reference Materials, and Publicity, Publications, and Photographs. Some overlap occurs across sub-series and the researcher may need to consult file lists in several sub-series. The materials date from 1930, when Marcy Center moved from the building, until 1968.
