The process for dyeing cloth changed little until the advent of complex 19th century machinery transformed the process into one of mechanized production. Images from the 15th century show a process almost identical to one pictured 300 years later. Vats were boiled over a wood fire and fabric taken in and out of the vat with the help of a manually turned winch. Dyers guild coats-of-arms showed this same process.
