Ralph Shapey's sixtieth birthday is the occasion for this exhibit, and for the performance of his music, in celebration, in several American cities. Shapey himself has decided to acknowledge the occasion by donating his manuscripts to the University of Chicago Library. The University of Chicago, he says, showed faith in him when he was appointed to the directorship of the Contemporary Chamber Players, and to the faculty. He offers the manuscripts as a token of his gratitude, and this small exhibition is offered in return. The exhibit showcases some of the manuscripts and sketches Shapey has donated, which vividly demonstrate his methods for scanning text and seating ensembles. The scores themselves are included as well.
