This exhibition opens the day of the University memorial service for Robert Rosenthal, who died on December 27, 1989, while visiting friends and book dealers in Edinburgh, Scotland. Mr. Rosenthal joined the staff of the University of Chicago Library in 1950 as Assistant Curator for Manuscripts, Archives, and Lincolniana. Four years later, he was named the first Curator of the newly created Department of Special Collections. In 1955 he received an A.M. from the Graduate Library School of the University, and later offered classes and seminars there. Among the items included in the exhibition are photographs of Mr. Rosenthal from the 1950s, photographs taken by Mrs. Rosenthal on their final trip to Scotland, and books that Mr. Rosenthal purchased from British dealers on that tour.
