Super Metroid, the third in the successful Metroid series of videogames, was released on March 19, 1994 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Frequently called one of the greatest games of all time, Super Metroid has been praised for its visual style and graphics, atmospheric sound design and music, detailed environments (rewarding hours of exploration), and refined controls and gameplay. Planned for the twentieth anniversary of the game's release, this exhibit celebrates the art of the videogame as seen in one of its early classics. Additionally, this exhibit explores the creative activity that lies beyond the game itself, from concept art and promotional materials to the fan art the game still inspires twenty years later. The great diversity of these ancillary pieces, the variety of styles and media used to promote and interpret the game, its characters and world, remains one of the most fascinating parts of its history.
