Brekell, Oscar. 2018. ゼロから分かる!日本茶の楽しみ方. 世界文化社

Brekell, Per Oscar. 2018. The Book of Japanese Tea. 京都: 淡交社.

Both of the above books are invaluable references regarding the processing and proper preparation of Japanese tea. Both are indispensable reference volumes.

Chan, Kam Pong. 2006. First Step to Chinese Puerh Tea. Taipei, Taiwan: Wushing Books Pub. Chan, Kam-Pong. 2008. A Glossary of Chinese Puerh Tea. Taipei: Wushing Books Publication Co.

Probably the only two of the only three books ever written on Pu’er tea in the English language, these books provide an invaluable reference on the history, identification, and storage of pu’er tea in the modern era. First Step to Chinese Puerh Tea in particular has beautiful images of various rare tea cakes from the author’s private collection.

Graham Teague, Anthony, and Kyŏng-hŭi Hong. 2007. The Korean Way of Tea: An Introductory Guide. Seoul, Korea: Seoul Selection.

This book provides a rare glimpse into traditional Korean tea culture and tea production.

Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck and T. S. Wendelstein. 2019. Journal Du Thé.

2020. Journal Du Thé. Vol. 3.

Journal Du Thé is the most enigmatic part of my collection. These two zines are meditations on tea practices around the world, and our relationship to tea. The magazine is beautifully designed, and the simple stories it tells are truly captivating.

Keating, Brian R., and Kim Long. 2015. How to Make Tea: The Science behind the Leaf. New York: Abrams Image.

Sarin, Rekha, and Rajan Kapoor. 2014. Chai: The Experience of Indian Tea. New Delhi: Niyogi Books.

This is the one book in my collection which would classify as a coffee table book, and it is filled with beautiful photography of Indian tea estates, and various other aspects of Indian tea culture. However, the book still merits being read cover-to-cover since it is probably the most comprehensive introduction to Indian tea in the English language.

Sujoy Gupta. 2001. Four Mangoe Lane: The First Address for Tea. Tata McGraw-Hill.

An obscure and forgotten corporate Biography of the Williamson Magor Company, this book provides an great insight into the history of the Indian tea trade and the technological development which led to the current modes of commercial tea production in India, and Assam in Particular.

工藤佳治, 向紅, and 丸山洋平. 2000. 中国茶図鑑. 東京: 文藝春秋.

This is a wonderful reference in identifying Chinese teas, particularly green tea, as it documents some of the rarest and strangest teas in all of China.

張華英, 日本茶業中央會, and NPO法人日本茶專賣指導員協會. 2015. 日本茶图鉴. 光明 日报出版社.

This book is a comprehensive reference for all the different kinds of Japanese tea produced in the different regions of the country.

This is by far the most informative book in my collection, and provides a full introduction to all aspects of tea, particularly as it pertains to Taiwan. If I were ever to teach a course on tea, this would certainly be a, if not the, central text.
