James Turrell's Rodin Crater Project

James Turrell's Rodin Crater Project is probably the most ambitious large-scale earthwork in situ.  In 1977, he purchased the Roden Crater, a dormant volcano northeast of Flagstaff, Arizona. Over the next thirty-some years, Turrell has been reshaping and infilling the mountain to its original form, leaving a cluster of spaces and walkways within. Apertures to each compartment are being designed to filter various degrees of natural light and to capture the subtle changes of the seasons within a cosmic landscape.
