Abstract:

The American Journal of Theology was established in January 1897 and was edited by the faculty of the Divinity School of the University of Chicago. The collection consists of outgoing business correspondence of the American Journal of Theology, and of a book of minutes of the editorial board, which was transferred to this collection from the Divinity School Correspondence.

Historical Note

The American Journal of Theology was established in January 1897 and was edited by the faculty of the Divinity School of the University of Chicago.

Scope Note

The collection consists of outgoing business correspondence of the American Journal of Theology, and of a book of minutes of the editorial board, which was transferred to this collection from the Divinity School Correspondence.

The correspondence is primarily concerned with the journal's founding, various contributions and articles solicited by and offered to the journal. The majority of the correspondence is by either William Rainey Harper or Ernest DeWitt Burton. There are 697 consecutively numbered pages that were removed from a letter-press copy book. The pages are arranged chronologically from September 19, 1896 to September 23, 1897. Included is an alphabetical index to the letters arranged by the last name of the addressee.

The minutes record the meetings of the editorial board of the American Journal of Theology, in the main, and of Biblical World and the Journal of Religion to a lesser degree, these also beings publications of the Divinity School. This bound volume covers the years 1906-1926.
