Rudolph Bachner (1905-1997) German-born writer and chemist. The collection contains three typescripts of Bachner’s work, including two novels and an unpublished memoir.

Biographical Note

Rudolph Bachner was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1905. He studied chemistry and philosophy, and began his career as a chemist, while also writing for Germany’s Weltbühne and Literary World. After Hitler rose to power in the Germany, Bachner fled to France in 1937 and, after a period of internment, joined the Foreign Legion as a volunteer and worked with the French resistance. He later emigrated to Spain, and then the United States, where he settled in La Jolla, California. He continued to write in the United States until his death in 1997.

Scope Note

The collection contains typescripts of three works written by Bachner.

Published in 1993, Destination Unknown: A Tale of Survival is an English translation of Bachner’s novel Flucht ohne Ziel: ein Leben in der Emigration (Hamburg, 1985.)

The novel Quartett in Moll (Studie eines Niedergangs) was published in Germany in 1986

“Reflexionen einer Nacht” is an unpublished memoir, dated 1969.
