Abstract:

The National Physicians' Committee for the Extension of Medical Service was a lobbying organization affiliated with the American Medical Association, and supported by pharmaceutical concerns. In 1948-1949, the NPC attacked Truman-era national health care proposals, such as the Wagner-Murray-Dingell Bill, and the federal security administrator Oscar R. Ewing's advocacy of compulsory health insurance. The records of the National Physicians' Committee for the Extension of Medical Service contain documents dating from 1948-1949, consisting mainly of newspaper clippings collected in the committee's library.

Historical Note

The National Physicians' Committee for the Extension of Medical Service (also known as the National Physicians Committee, or NPC) was a lobbying organization affiliated with the American Medical Association, and supported by pharmaceutical concerns. In 1948-1949, the NPC attacked Truman-era national health care proposals, such as the Wagner-Murray-Dingell Bill, and federal security administrator Oscar R. Ewing's advocacy of compulsory health insurance.

Scope Note

The records of the National Physicians' Committee for the Extension of Medical Service contain documents dating from 1948-1949, consisting mainly of newspaper clippings collected in the committee's library. Clippings are organized by subject into multiple alphabetical files, including one set of files on selected subjects; two sets of general files from 1948; and one set of general files from 1949. There are a small number of unsorted clippings. Also included in the collection are a file of news releases, and a study by Elizabeth W. Wilson titled "The Rhode Island Cash Sickness Compensation Plan."
