Scope Note

This photograph is labeled “a new, improved print of the only photograph taken of the Wright brothers’ first flight near Kitty Hawk, N.C., on Dec 17, 1903—one produced by the brothers themselves.” The glass negative was found in the personal estate of Orville Wright in 1949. The photograph is considered a masterpiece even though the brothers did not consider themselves to be photographers. The photo itself depicts the low-flying plane and a man standing near it on a beach. The photo’s lower left corner is damaged, and there is some fading on its left side, but the image is generally clear and detailed.
