Scope Note

This collection consists of Ernest Howard Adye's (d. 1920) Twentieth Century Atlas of Microscopical Petrography (London: Thomas Murby, 1906), with accompanying microscopic slides in one small box. The slides, prepared by James R. Gregory & Co., were initially further subdivided into twelve parts of four slides each. This original grouping is only partially preserved in the present collection, and most slides in the box are now ungrouped. These ungrouped slides are have been organized alphabetically. Some petrological specimens may have fallen off the slides, and over half of the slides that originally accompanied the book appear to have been lost. The inventory of extant slides is as follows:

Slides for Part 2

• Carboniferous Oolitic Limestone

• Globigerinal Limestone

Slides for Part 5

• Clay-Slate

• Mica-Lamprophyre

Slides for Part 7

• Kentallenite

Slides for Part 8

• Barbados Earth

• Red Sandstone

Slides for Parts 9-12

• Globigerina-Ooze

Ungrouped Slides

• “Bargate-Stone”

• Borolanite

• Eclogite

• Endothyra-Limestone

• Glaucophane-Schist

• Leithakalk

• Limburgite

• Picritic-Serpentine

• Schorl-Granite

• Wenlock-Limestone

• Unidentifiable Fragment

Some slides are broken and have sharp edges, and should be handled with caution.
