Abstract:

Mary Gyarfas (1920-2004) Professor, University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration (SSA), mid-1950s - late-1970s. The collection contains material relating to courses Gyarfas taught while at UC, faculty meeting notes and correspondence, and various publications, both by Gyarfas herself and those relating to the SSA more broadly. Of particular interest are the collected papers presented at the Charlotte Towle Memorial Symposium. Also contained in the collection are materials relating to Gyarfas’ involvement in a number of professional organizations, including The National Association of Social Workers and the Council on Social Work Education.

Biographical Note

Mary Gyarfas (1920-2004) was a professor at the University of Chicago in the school of Social Service Administration (SSA) from the mid-1950s to the late-1970s. In addition to the classes she taught, Gyarfas was an active member of many of the administrative committees of the school. She was involved in the Casework Sequence Committee, the Curriculum Policy Committee, and a number of various subcommittees convened to discuss important topics in the field of social services at the time.

Scope Note

The Mary Gyarfas Papers are organized into three series: Series I: Charlotte Towle Memorial Symposium Papers; Series II: University of Chicago; Series III: Professional Organizations. The majority of the collection is contained in Series II – materials relating to Gyarfas’ time as a professor at the University of Chicago. The collection also contains correspondence, reports, casework, papers, meeting minutes, curricula notes, and coursework.

Series I, Charlotte Towle Memorial Symposium Papers, contain seven papers, written by invited lecturers from around the country. These papers were not formally published at the time, though they were later collected into Theories of Social Casework, published by the University of Chicago.

Series II, University of Chicago, contains material relating to Gyarfas’ position as a professor at UC. The series is divided into five subseries. The first, Casework, contains correspondence, notes, and paper drafts relating to the Casework Sequence Committee. This committee, composed of twenty-two faculty and twelve students, convened in order to structure the course of classes and fieldwork in order to acquaint students to casework in the field of social services. The second subseries, Course, relates more widely to the classes taught by Gyarfas while at UC. This subseries contains reading lists, assignments, and notes on the doctoral seminars led by Gyarfas. The third subseries, Curriculum, contains material relating to the Curriculum Policy Committee. Contained are position statements on curriculum advancement from a number of faculty members, student surveys, and general correspondence relating to curricular issues. The fourth subseries, Faculty, contains faculty meeting minutes and notes as well as faculty evaluations. Additionally, this subseries contains notes relating to the Social Service Review, the faculty published journal from the SSA. The final subseries, Reports, contains reports on child development published by various departments at the University of Chicago. Also included are reports on fieldwork and a proposal for the new Social Services Center.

Series III, Professional Organizations, contains contain documents relating to the professional organizations that Gyarfas was involved in. Specifically, it contains publications and correspondence relating to the National Association of Social Workers, The Council on Social Work Education, and the US Department of Health, Education, and Welfare.

Series IV, Restricted Material, contains student references and evaluations to which access is restricted for 80 years.
