Abstract:

Charles Linnaeus Hostetter, student. The Charles Linnaeus Hostetter Papers consist of a photocopy of a typescript copy of Hostetter's diary (1860-1864; 1882). The diary provides an account of his experiences at the Old University of Chicago and as a Union soldier in the Civil War. Also included in this collection is a letter from Hostetter's son to his grandson, "Junior," dated Christmas 1937.

Biographical Note

Charles Linnaeus Hostetter was born on November 18, 1842. He graduated from the Old University of Chicago in 1865. He lived in Grouseland, Carroll County, Illinois.

His diaries contain references to the weather, farming, attending school, working at a bank, voting for "Old Abe," serving in the Civil War, and traveling to Yellowstone in May and June of 1882.

Scope Note

The Charles Linnaeus Hostetter Papers consist of a photocopy of a typescript copy of Hostetter's diary (1860-1864; 1882). The diary provides an account of his experiences at the Old University of Chicago and as a Union soldier in the Civil War.
