Historical Note

Hyde Park High School was founded in 1863 as a single room within a local grammar school and continued to be housed in several locations from its opening until 1886. Three years later, the Chicago Board of Education decided that a new location was needed to account for the school’s growing population, and resided at this second location until 1910. The School moved to its present site in July 1914, where it has established permanency in the Woodlawn neighborhood on the south side of Chicago, Illinois. In 1976, Hyde Park High School became a magnet school and a Career Academy with its focus on college readiness and career preparation, which was reflected in the school’s name change to Hyde Park Academy High School in 1996.

Scope Note

The collection is arranged first by material and then by date. The first five folders hold documents relating to student sporting and alumni events, in addition to miscellaneous student belongings and memorabilia. The remainder of the collection consists of yearbooks ranging from 1908 to 1934 and monthly student publications from 1907 to 1912.
