Biographical Note

Constance Allenberg Katzenstein was born in 1927 in Memphis, Tennessee to Sidney Allenberg and Frieda Krauss. Sidney was a lawyer and Frieda, who had graduated from the University of Chicago, was a social worker. Sidney died suddenly in 1928 and the family moved to Chicago.

After several years of living in South Shore, the family moved to Hyde Park to be closer to the Jewish community of the area. Katzenstein attended Hyde Park High School. In 1942 at the age of 15, she begin attending the University of Chicago, having passed an early entrance exam. There she began to take classes from psychologist Bruno Bettelheim at the Orthogenic School. In 1946 Katzenstein received her bachelor of philosophy degree from the Commiteee on Human Development. She continued on with graduate school, receiving a masters degree in human development in 1949.

Constance married Henry Katzenstein, a graduate student in physics at the University. They moved to Connecticut, where she tried to work on her dissertation. Their son, David, was born on January 3, 1952. Ruth Sydney, Amy Rosa, and Robert followed.

After Living in Boston and in New Jersey, the family moved to Los Angeles in 1962. Katzenstein began to work at a Crisis Center, and eventually returned to academia, working at UCLA to complete her dissertation with her University of Chicago committee. She received her Ph.D in 1971 in psychology. By 1972 Katzenstein had established a private practice.
